Kid couldn't squeeze 3/4" crimpers together on PEX. Finished out the job and had a coaching session with him. Dude was squeezing using his wrist and thumb, not his forearm.
Took me 10 minutes to even figure out what the fuck he was doing wrong. I never thought I'd have to explain safe and correct squeezing to another man.
It's your job to help him, then. He's 18, he's fresh out of high school- what do you expect? He's malleable and will look up to you, be a good example and don't be too hard on him.
If it all goes well, ten years from now, he'll be telling the new guy about how you taught him how to crimp because he was a limp-wristed bitch when he first showed up. And you will laugh.
There are not many of those fathers around anymore. I didn't know how to start a lawnmower till I was 27. ...Wish my dad would have taught me that one.
Yeah, sorry, not everyone has wonderful dads and begins their career as a working man at age 12. And it's up to those of us who are competent to step in and show these lost young men the way.
What purpose does shitting on him for being incompetent at a job he's never done before serve? It won't make him want to do better, it'll make him want to quit. Help him to build confidence.
We were all green at one time but there is something wrong with this generation and I suspect it's our fault.
Fathers/mothers just aren't teaching life skills to their children. Things that were common before have been pushed by the wayside. How to swing a hammer, what that thingy does, basic electricity. I had a 22 year old ask me what ohms are for.....and I suspect he had never really used a drill before.
Your kids need to be a part of your day, your projects, your work, so that they know how to do something. Maybe it's just easier to let them play video games.......
They need to know how to cook, do laundry, balance a checkbook, hell, start a chainsaw!
Fuck it, I'll come work for you but you better not yell at me.
I wasn't a jerk about it, just asked him to step aside so we could get the job done. I make fun of him on the stuff that won't demoralize him, like forgetting his tools on the back of my truck when he went home.
It was just odd. Using the strength in my hands has never been a thing I thought of as a skill. We're probably more fucked than I realized, but I'm not gonna mock a kid that is trying.
Well good for you then! I remember teaching my friends little brother to swing a hammer and how odd it was he didn't know how. Then it occurred to me his dad walked before he was 10 and he genuinely wanted to know so I took the time and he learned. I remember how happy he was to finish hammering a nail and I was waiting for him to hit his thumb but he didn't!
Its definitely the gayest sentence I've said since becoming a plumber. Which is sorta impressive really, because off-color commentary is a professional skill for us.

A ready to rock fully functional adult. His father should have taught him this shit and so much more. At 18 he should be on his 3rd or 5th job.
