I'm not a Star Wars turbo nerd, but i do remember reading about how Palpatine was able to look far into the future and saw an inter galactic invasion coming from the Vong. A race very powerful with huge ships. The death star was a weapon created in preparation of that invading race.

that's all pre release of Ep 7. In fact, I'm not sure if they ever wrapped up they ever finished the Yuzan Vong stuff because I'm pretty sure Disney cancelled all of the publishing licenses when they decided to start from scratch.
