This knife scares me

I recently came into possession of this switch blade. I don't know much about knives or this brand, but it's so sharp I'm afraid of the thing. It could cause some serious damage. I've owned other blades in the past and nothing come close to the sharpness. Thinking about carrying it around for self defense and utility. Any opinion on it?

Respect it rather than fear it. Buck knives have stood the test of time, so you've probably got a quality product. Just be mindful of this: any spring assisted folders have yet another piece that could break.

Respect it rather than fear it.

Very apt statement. Like manifesting "order" by embracing and conquering "chaos".

it's so sharp I'm afraid of the thing.

Like most people, you're just not accustomed to your working knives being as sharp as they are supposed to be.
A dull knife is actually MORE dangerous during use because more force must be applied to make it cut. More force means less control.

Carried the classic Buck 110 knife I bought as a kid, down at the True Value hardware store, for years.
Loved that knife. Not sure how I feel about that auto design, as I got pretty good at opening it one-handed.

I have also been using one of these for years now to keep all the knives in the house sharp and as useful as they were always meant to be:

I might try that knife sharpener. I tried the flat ones and I just make shit duller so I've been using a pull-sharpener.

That being said, I do use a cheapo dull knife for scraping stuff, poking things, and generally being an asshole to my knife. The sharp one is for actual cutting.

You won't regret it. Watch the videos, follow the instructions and it becomes dead simple to keep whatever edge you feel is appropriate for whatever knife it is. After I got it I could have kicked myself for all of the time I'd wasted before.

Buck knives are awesome. I got my "deer hunting" buck knife when I was 14. When I was 15 I was hunting from the ground, no fancy tree stands for me. I wore a pair of overalls and slid the knife in it's leather case in the side pocket on the leg of the overalls. It slipped out without me noticing. I realized what happened after I got home. Nobody would take me back to look for it. A year later we went back to the same area to hunt. I walked right back to where I had sat the year before and there it was. I picked it up, pulled it out of it's case and gave it a try. Yep! Still sharp enough to shave the hair on my arm!
Those are some awesome knives.
I would be afraid of one like yours! I would accidentally hit the button while it was in my pocket and cut my nuts off! LOL

this switch blade

I think you don't know anything about anything, why do you even need a knife?

Thinking about carrying it around for self defense

you'll just be giving the dude a weapon to stick up your ass, just carry pepper spray or hit them with your purse.

Buck makes a good solid knife. US steel.

The blade will never be this sharp again, meaning, once you use it on things, over and over, you will never get it this sharp on your own, unless you’re a master knife sharpener. Therefore, I suggest you appreciate its sharpness and don’t use it for anything other than self defense.
Don’t use it to show off by cutting paper or shaving your arm. Don’t use it as a tool at work, find another knife for that. Keep this knife solely for self defense. Practice deploying it and returning it to sheath.

Good advice. I was hoping due to the quality it wouldn't be an issue, but this is what I will end up doing.

If you're thinking of carrying it for self defense,
#1 , check the laws in your state.
You don't need a felony.
#2 a knife in a fistfight is an escalation. You can get in more trouble for a knife than a gun in a self defense scenario.
Just get a gun.

Cheap ass shit that's never consistently functioned.
My EDC is an auto Adamas(man hand size)
I rotate out or carry with,OTF's from Templar,Benchmade and others.
Nothing under $300usd is benchmark for true craftsmanship.
I like horizontal cross-draw fixed blades with spear point or Karambit type.
D2,S30V and the new powder super steels ensure surgical sharpness.
Anyway that 110 is chinese shit.
Buck 110 was the top blade to carry in the 70's,every boy over 13 had one on his belt
