We could know by taking a look at historical and modern religions and testing for the existence of events which could only reasonably be explained by the existence of a particular deity or group of deities.

Catholic doctrine is that "God" is a Trinity of persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In the OT the word God/GOD is a translation of a few different Hebrew words: elohim, elah, el, and sometimes YHWH. The word elohim can be used to describe judges like Moses, and obviously Moses is not a member of the Trinity. The word elohim can be used to describe beings for which worship is prohibited. Also, persons don't have any status in judgement in Judaism.
