We were with our homeschool group today and my son fell and hit his head on a corner and got a deep gash in his forehead. Thankfully 2 moms drove me and stayed with me at the ER awhile (they kept me calm, reminded me to say he was "up to date" on vaxs, and were playing little games and singing to keep the boy distracted).
My son is a freaking tank. He barely cried the entire time, barely bled (even though it was a large and deep gash), and when they were constraining him like a burrito and injecting anesthetic into his forehead he stayed relatively calm as I was holding him and consoling him. The Dr and nurse both said they were really surprised, since most kids even twice his age would scream and freak out the whole time. My boy ended up falling asleep while they were stitching him up (thanks valium), we went home, got pizza, and he was running around like nothing happened (as my pregnant self was trying to run after him and prevent him from hitting his head on every single thing that seems to be exactly his forehead height). I have to somehow keep this wound clean and safe from re-injury (he won't keep a bandage on for more than 20min, he's zooming everywhere, and his favorite things to do are wade in the frog pond and play in the dirt with his cars- so wish us luck, haha).
Let me know if you guys have advice, or share a scar-y story :)
His story is cute, he was going to hug his 2 year old friend and they both lost their balance and fell. He loves very intensely I guess, like his parents :)

Lemme tell ya -i have a 4-6 inch x half-inch thick scar in the middle of face/ cheekbone from being sliced open with a broken bottle in a years ago street brawl as a zesty teenage idiot.
No chicks dug my scar, they were way more enamored with my bravado and sensitive listening skill!!.
That's what I was thinking. I used to run around barefoot in drainage ditches. Can't count how many times I sliced my foot on broken glass or lodged a nail in my foot. Rub a little dirt in it and you're good to go.
yeah, he sliced his foot this summer and would not be dissuaded from getting in the frog pond daily, even though our 100 year old septic system may trickle off into it through the field >.<
Soon he'll be a weapon. A messenger of death praying to be the one to kill the last nigger, faggot, or jew on the Earth. But until that glorious day he must train to pack the gear, shoot his weapon true, and make sure every enemy of the white race dies in agony and as revenge for all prior whites lost to the jews.
just keep putting it back on lol. Maybe Duct Tape.
and since you asked....
8 years old, parents take me to soccer game (not for me, other adults playing). See other kids, hey other kids, other kids dads car has golf clubs, oh fun, yea lets go hit a few over there. Other kids going first, they are after all, his dad's clubs. He tells me to back up a little before he swings.
Do you think I backed up.. enough? I did not.
I don't know if he hit the ball or not, but I suddenly felt very poorly. The other kids are all staring at me and my head hurts a bit. I see the other one point at me "You got a hole in your face" Funny I don'..ow..owwww hooo I ran and it looked like that the thundercats theme, all foreground colors streaking into infinity, I could see ahead of me and I was yelling for help. I see adults in the soccer crowd, they are all circly around and I'm docking into the safety of people taller than me. I see the palm a large mans hand like a stop sign in front of my face. I am now on my back and its exactly like a movie scene, everyone around and above me looking down discussing what to do.
18 stitches inside my cheek, chicks dig the joker look only one side and very understated, but still noticeable for scar cred.
"reminded me to say he was "up to date" on vaxs" ..everything is on a shared ledger in the cloud these days. I have not had even a flu shot since 07, with the exception of a tetanus shot in 2019. The only reason I got that was because I needed an emergency anti-biotic scrip and the doc would not give it to me unless I was up to date on this. I was like, "WTF does this even have to do with my current condition?" Nothing, but we are the hospital, so what we say, goes. I now pay 170 bucks a month for a private PCP to lean on when I need shit
yeah, a lot of the info is definitely shared between health care practitioners, but I don't think they could access his records from our pediatrician (especially on short notice) so they had to take my word that "we're good".
My boy gashed his forehead on a doorhandle couple years back when he waas 5 as well. Pretty much same story you just told. Completely chill when he went for stiches though if I remember right my wife told me they had to hold him for that part. Now he goes around telling people he's harry Potter and hold up his hair to show his scar. My advice, don't worry about it. Keep him clean best you can. He's 5, you can't do a damned thing about it. Kids are solid, he'll be fine.

what a cutie.
They do burrito-wrap them for the stitches, but my kid seriously impressed the heck out of me for staying so calm. I'm glad I was able to keep my cool and be there to comfort him through it, but I'm giving him all due credit for doing awesome.
I have these things called steri-strips but I don't think I can put them on the stitches. My friends and I almost just left the hospital and were going to do the steri-strips because of how little blood there was, but the gash was really deep so I didn't want to fuck around.
when they were constraining him like a burrito and injecting anesthetic into his forehead he stayed relatively calm as I was holding him and consoling him.
Idk if it applies to your boy but I often find that women make these situations a disaster with their emotions whereas a dad would be more like, "that's a hell of a hole you got in your head. sit tight and they'll put you back together".
I can't tell you how many times I got hurt and have to tell my mother, "settle down lady, you're irritating me". Then she remembers that I'm an asshole and laughs.
yes, I can totally see that. Thankfully I'm not squeemish with blood. I was just very glad he was not freaking out/screaming so I knew the pain wasn't too unbearable for him.
When my son was 7 he had to get 8 staples in his head from rough housing with his brother and they fell. Another time, they were rough housing and he got his finger broke and had to have surgery on it.
Glad your little man is ok and handled it well. My little guy (when he was little, 4) stood up on the his stuffed chair (the ones that look like a living room chair that are made for kids) to open his blinds. He fell down and put a gash in the back of his head. The worst part was that it was very early in the morning before I was up and he didn’t wake me up because he thought he did something wrong 😢 I woke up and gave him a hug and saw blood everywhere and asked him why he didn’t wake mommy up. I felt absolutely terrible. Took him in and he got two staples in the back of his head. I love that kid with the depths of my soul. It’s heartbreaking watching them get old. I’m happy you get to enjoy many more years with yours :) Sounds like you’re doing a great job, mom!

These kids are so resilient! Poor little buddy, blood loss is definitely a reason to wake the parents! haha.
I definitely try to appreciate every moment while he is young and still wants me to cuddle with him at night to fall asleep, especially bc my 11 yo daughter is becoming her own little person and I know it only lasts for so long. <3

Umm, my youngest son cut a deep gash in his little finger at his school on thursday received a call from the office (he was attempting to stab the ground with his buddy's metal lunch spoon and somehow - ground to hard i dunno - sliced his finger on the neck of the spoon. He didnt realize until he saw all the blood).
Might require a stich or two (maybe 8-9 mm and deep) on the inside crease.
Rang Gp, wass booked till way later in the day, then came up he wasn't up to date (i politely declined the tetanus booster and HPV for him last year). No way are they getting any more retarded vaccines.
Anyways, she wanted him to get a booster - just in case bla bla - and she kinda suggested the afterhours clinic if i didn't want to wait to have him seen - but told me 'it's important i let them know he is not up date with his schedule.'
'Ok Thanks (but no thanks) i might call you back'.
Long story short - Son has his wound rinsed out by me each morning / night with some betadine and then a dab of antiseptic cream and covered with surgical tape /a plaster and a small wrap.
God damn the medical community here in NZ is insane.
yeah, it's retarded. Tetanus usually comes from bacteria in horse manure- which most people don't have to worry about. I think tetanus vax has been associated with causing infertility also.
[ - ] Not_C 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 16:04:39 ago (+1/-0)
Forehead cuts heal super fast. Thin skin, no fat underneath, etc. The cut will be closed up and scabbed over enough in a day and he'll be able to go back to being a kid.
But a trick every parent should know is to use Superglue for cuts. Rinse out the cut with cold water, maybe a little rubbing alcohol, pinch the cut together and put some Superglue on it.
It acts like a second layer of skin, or an artificial scab, while keeping the cut closed. So they can jump right back into the mud seconds later.
Superglue is non-toxic. But you can also get what they call "Liquid Bandages" which is medical grade and has some antibacterial stuff added in. Liquid Bandages are cheap and you can get it pretty much anywhere you can buy regular bandages. Walmart, Walgreens, Amazon, etc.
For cuts you don't want the spray. You will want the Liquid Bandages that come with a brush. (You'll know what I mean if you look it up.)
[ - ] Althea [op] 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 16:28:51 ago (+1/-0)
Thanks a lot for the info. I did hear that superglue was originally intended to "put together" wounds quickly on the battlefield, I didn't know it was non-toxic though (it smells otherwise, lol).
I'll likely get some liquid bandages to add to the first aid kit, I got steri-strips which are kind of like a thin bandage that stays on for 2 weeks. Honestly we were considering just using the steri-strips since the bleeding was minimal, but the gash was very deep and wide open so we figured it was better suited for stitches.
I'm sure we will be utilizing steri-strips and liquid bandages at some point with this energetic kid so I appreciate the advice :)
Bees make it from the same plant we get tee tree oil from so it contains many of those healing properties. Shouldn't use the oil on deep wounds, but the honey is even used in open chest surgeries.
Those women are fantastic. They kept you calm during a time of trouble, and you kept your son calm with your calm(er) presence. This let the doctors do their job without hassle. Good shit all around.
If appropriate offer them a small gift of appreciation, or invite their families over for a bbq or something.
[ - ] Althea [op] 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 16:32:30 ago (+1/-0)
Yes, I've thanked them via text/call a few times and they keep saying "don't worry, it takes a village" but I definitely want to do something more to show appreciation. I was thinking to buy them both orchid plants or something, but I know one of them would much rather a bottle of wine, haha.
[ - ] Althea [op] 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 08:56:09 ago (+1/-0)
They don't think he had a concussion because he did not lose consciousness, and did not vomit. Honestly though, the CAT scans are poison machines so I'm kinda glad they left it at that and didn't do unnecessary procedures.
[ - ] Althea [op] 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 09:24:57 ago (+1/-0)
Vaseline is a petroleum based product made from chemical manufacturing waste shit, but that is what the hospital staff recommended. I'll probably do some calendula salve I made made from olive oil, beeswax and calendula flowers which are supposed to help flesh wounds. I know some people in my "natural mama" circles think collodial silver is amazing, while some are worried that it can accumulate in the body and have a negative impact.
You wouldnt last long around here flipping out like that. Anything under 10 stitches is a whiskey dent. (shopping car bumping car door) Let that child breath and you might get a touch of masculinity by age 14,but I wouldnt hold my breath
[ - ] Althea [op] 1 point 8 monthsSep 27, 2024 09:15:30 ago (+1/-0)
okay big guy. I'm just trying to keep my energetic boy from bumping his head on everything and needing a re-visit to the ER. I'm fine with blood, have done my own surgeries before (on chickens, rats, removed bot fly larvae, etc) so my disposition is pretty strong. I've also had a 6 month old baby that died- but yes, I flipped out for that.
My boy is sweet and kind, but also a fucking warrior that takes a hit and keeps on going (he once smashed his finger and half his nail came off and he just did the "ehhh" like Peter Griffin skinning his knee once and then went about his day), and I am in no way concerned about his masculinity. I don't think a little kid being confident that he is unconditionally loved will be an issue.
PERFECT example given. Two post mirror opposite the latter supporting my view of info given OP. When he is 30 and still at home he'll have a small scar as a reminder

I would be happy to have us all live together on our family property (we have multiple dwellings on our homestead and usually have 3 generations living here at a time). We work together as a communal family and support each other. We share in caring for the land, our farm animals, fruit trees/bushes, gardens, forest, and children/elderly. I think you are envisioning a small urban space without a back yard, with an adult son confined to a basement to get his "own space"- but how I live, family teamwork makes a much better and richer life, and is in many ways necessary to share the 'burden' of producing our own healthy food (especially when a few of us need jobs outside the home).
I would also be happy (and not surprised) if my little explorer decided to create his own homestead with the knowledge he gains from his upbringing on a working farm, where we have slaughtered our own chickens, grown our produce, and preserved it. But this is in no way a one person endeavor.
I'll just leave you with a 'bless your heart' and I wish you the best on your journey.
That's amazing. My boy loves catching the chickens, but ours run much faster and are less domesticated than the video. He actually did put one in his red wagon last week and got it to somehow stay while he was playing on the scooter.

Brought a chick home from the party and got out of costume and cleaned up. Including removing the zipper.
Which I had been using to cover the actual scar on my neck. (Just one of many)
Her: "You were using a fake zipper to cover the real scar?"
Me: "Yep."
Her: "That's kinda hot."
Then she wanted to know the whole story. Then we had snu-snu. Women. Go figure.

In Beruit in '83, I had to cover a through-and-through bullet wound in my left forearm with 3 wraps of that tape.
Finally got back to the embassy compound, and the doc there took one look and said "You're SF , huh?"
I said, "Yep."
He said, "Thought so. SOG guys used to get brought in to me with the same kinda patches on them back in '69."
Me: "Who do you think I learned it from?"

Anything under 10 stitches is a whiskey dent.

Let that child breath and you might get a touch of masculinity by age 14,but I wouldnt hold my breath

Two post mirror opposite the latter supporting my view of info given OP.
When he is 30 and still at home he'll have a small scar as a reminder

I would also be happy (and not surprised) if my little explorer decided to create his own homestead with the knowledge he gains from his upbringing on a working farm, where we have slaughtered our own chickens, grown our produce, and preserved it. But this is in no way a one person endeavor.
I'll just leave you with a 'bless your heart' and I wish you the best on your journey.
