Wow. Iām not a huge follower of Megadeth and their members, although Iāve seen them more than any other band. I didnāt know this guy had passed. He was a great drummer. Played on their best albums it seems. I have a few MD CDs. I donāt like how they are still called āthrashā when in fact they are very technical and to the point. Nothing in their sound is a mistake. I saw them at the ElDorado Saloon in Carmichael in 1986-87? Testament opened for them. Still have the stub!š¤
I bet that was such a great show! Lucky dude, you were. Iām not a superfan either, but have developed a deep appreciation of their music as time goes on!
Watching this soundcheck makes me happy. Iāve watched it so many times now. These guys are just enjoying playing this amazingly technical song, without Daveās huge ego getting in the way and Mensa, somehow, makes it look easy and fun. The part where he is smiling right before the final breakdown around 4:25 brought me legitimate joy. To see the love he has for his instrument moved me, I cannot lie.
I understand that Nic died on stage of a heart attack. Not sure if true but that is the most fucking metal way for a drummer to go out.
I saw MEGADETH once, they got bumped from the local arena to a way smaller venue at the very last moment. They were so load and the place so small that I couldnāt hear a damn thing.
He did die on stage! I read somewhere that Dave Ellefson said that Menza always talked about wanting to die while playing the drums so when he found out that Nick passed, Ellefson said something along the lines as āThat bastard died exactly how he wanted!ā
And wow, megadeth made you partially deaf!!! You probably werenāt the only one that happened to that night. The suffering we go through for music. Iāve had tinnitus for almost two years from years of playing and seeing shows without proper ear protection.
He died right next to Chris Poland. They were in a band named āOhmā and he had a heart attack on stage at the end of it. See my other comment in this thread.
So get this: after he left megadeth, he ended up crossing paths with Chris Poland(my favorite guitarist and the guy off the earlier albums) and they were in a jazz fusion band called āOhmā.
Well, they were doing a show and Nick had a heart attack right on stage and died right there at the end of the show. Fucking. Legend. Rust In Peace, Nick. You inspired me to learn to drum.

Did not realize why he disappeared from Megadeth until just now reading his wiki. Sad.
