I'd say it's dead.

Looks like a cocoon got hit by fungus by the looks of it, never seen a fuzzy moth cocoon, usually it's a hard-shell.

The picture looks like a royally fucked up Asp caterpillar. Given their fur is that color and texture, I'm more inclined to say texasblood managed to find some abomination with my camera that he borrowed without permission.
