The 4g device blockout has been entirely based on feel and not actual compatibility. Official statement from Xiaomi stating it clearly.

None of our 3 personal devices are compatible. At least one business phone still works. OH WELL.

The networks are not actually shut down, but they are just blocking phones based on semi arbitrary lists.

You obviously do not understand what is happening in Australia right now. They are blocking 4g phones because many of them are not compatible with VOLTE over 4G, which is now mandatory in this country. What makes this worse, is that there are different version of VOLTE and many devices that are compatible are still being blocked, because no one actually knows what is and what isn't and the networks are guessing.
