I have a friend that just completed navy boot camp. I fear for his future. I tried to explain things to him but he had already made up his mind when I met him. Don't think he won't get out of front-line work either. They have a fun little program to put you in with the Army/Marine grunts whenever they need it. Happened to me and many of my Navy friends. Even if you're forward-deployed expeditionary forces, hell, especially then as you're already trained up and in-theatre.

I do feel like some people get mad at him for breaking promises, when they should be mad at him for making promises that are not within the President's power to keep. The President also gets outsize focus from voters compared to his power. To the extent any of this shit is real, the power lies with Congress. And not enough people know who their Congressman is, much less what he does.

Senators are as close I think as the people get to well-motivated voting. They're powerful and also something of celebrities.
