Maybe it's because I was held to such a high standard in the USMC, but seeing shit like this pisses me off. I busted my ass, along with the other 87 guys in my training platoon, to be able to perform drill to absolute perfection. We would use our free time to practice.

The purpose behind drill (all the marching shit) is to teach men how to move as a unit and remain disciplined, alert, focused, and ready to carry out each order as it comes. These idiots couldn't drill their way through a wet paper bag.

Is that the purpose though? Is that what the people giving you commands told you? Have you ever considered they may be lying?

It seems obvious to me that drilling that hard has more to do with beating you into submission and not giving you time to think than anything else. They want you to be used to taking orders without question because if you start thinking for yourself you might decide it's not a good idea to run to your death just so the commander can save his favorite pair of shoes while retreating.
