Morse was also a noted anti-Catholic polemicist. Something about an Austrian-Popish plot against the US iirc. He wrote that years earlier. He was a New Englander, descended from Puritans.

How were the Jews involved in his narrative? It's of course no secret Lord Palmerston hated the United States. Had Napoleon III gone along the US would have faced a four front war: the British Empire from the north into NYC, the French into California from Mexico, a land war with the Confederates, and injuns from the west.

Trying to beat the US military in a land war on their turf was never going to be easy though. Ironically, Russia basically saved the Union.

Ah Lord Palmerston's zoo (some merchant of Venice vibes in there). I'm unfamiliar with the other angles mentioned, save for Russian navy salvation... Was either side in the war completely in the right though?

Still the war of northern aggression, even though I'm a Yankee with one ancestor a calvary officer killed by a horse after the war, and another an engineer who defected to neutral territory

I could also have mentioned the budding French plan to attack the Union naval blockade of New Orleans.

I don't have a strong take on the moral question of who was right. The South lost because it was outgunned and it failed in getting foreign help. And I have family that fought on both sides.

Note that Palmerston believed in an Irish controlled media.

Lyndon LaRouche - but nevertheless interesting.

When you see (insert historical figure) vs. the British Empire - bet it's LaRouche.
