"The Pskov Region is one of the most peat-rich regions in the European part of Russia. It has over 300 peat deposits with over 563 mln tonnes of peat."
Not too bad for Russia, but worse than here in every way. Plus, too urban and too mass tourist oriented. Same coastal mountain range though, and it's geographically attractive.
I was 10 miles from Three Mile Island during the excitement, and my last winter there it didn't get above 10F for 3 weeks straight. The last freeze here was around 1993. Although it was 34F in my backyard a few years ago. Typical low is ~46F.
My dog needs a sweater for walks. Its actually a bit milder here than in north jersey where I grew up. I call it the riviera. It doesn’t snow that much in this part of the state. It usually gets above 32 for some part of the day even in Jan. But we will get one or two cold snaps where it stays in the teens or twenties for a few days to a week. I think the hardiness zone here is +5F. Theres maybe one or two nights when it gets down there every winter.
As a gardener, that weather is totally off the table. My oldest potted plants are almost 25, but they would die every year there. The other factor is the general stodginess and overcrowding of the east coast. 80% of Americans live in the eastern half, and the vibe in the parts I've experienced is weird. A 'stodgy' type of weird, not the fruits and nuts type of weird out here.
I think this is something Californians tell each other to cope with living in California. NJ is really not overcrowded unless you are living in newark or something. Theres plenty of open spaces nearby. The only think I resent are the shitskins.
There's no cope. I don't know of a better place to live in the US than right here, for my purposes anyway. It's not recommended for wage slavers or licensed business owners, but there are worse states for that too. It's not "California" though. Only about 0.25% of California is habitable. Move outside the southern 'mile wide' coastal zone and now you're dealing with horrific weather for much of the year.
Aside from the cranberry bogs, it does seem fairly populated. With an ideal population level, very little human activity would be visible from space. Maybe villages and hamlets could be seen if you zoomed way in. But of course there would be no satellites either.

There are some milder places on the black sea near Sochi. Maybe something like South Carolina in terms of temp range.

Yeah its an interesting area. There is skiing in the mountain ranges but then very mild at the coast.
