Walkies and Radios

submitted by NoRefunds to AskUpgoat 4 monthsDec 5, 2024 18:54:38 ago (+0/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Anyone got a good walkie recommendation? I have the baofeng chink crap with extended whips and even when off roading and the walkies are line of site and one radio is elevated, they really don't go much farther than 1/4 mile.

Walkie Talkies are for unlicensed users and have a very low power limit. 1/4 mile is about all you'll ever get, even with decent ones.

Get a HAM license and you can get much better radios on the cheap. Miles of clean signal.

It was more for camping/off roading so we can talk at distance with small portable devices.

HAM band radios have a walkie talking version, too. But instead of being limited to 500 milliwatts, you can go to go 50 watts.

Yesue (sp?) or icomm. But if you get icomm, check for Israeli explosives.

Well, if you weren't a pussy and used the FCC reserved bands...

The only reason to use the FCC bands is in an emergency situation when you have no other choice.
Otherwise anyone and everyone would advise against it.

In the event of national emergency of the foreign or civil war variety, those bands are likely to be jammed anyway.

They are never used and only have a 1-2 mile range.

GMRS radios perform a little better than walkie talkies or CB radios. You only need to pay for a one time license fee to use them. (No test like ham radios.) but they have similar range to CB radios. If you are in line of sight of a gmrs repeater your range can be pretty far, up to 20 miles if the other radio can see the same repeater.

yeah the UV-5R I have don't have any range really, they are basically the same as those Cobra ones that come in a 3 pack

A possible solution is using cross band repeat. I don’t know if gmrs radios have this feature but some ham radios do. What you do is setup a mobile or base station to receive on one frequency and broadcast cast on another (you’ll be hogging two channels if you do this.) Then you park it somewhere where up high in sight of all your radios, on top of a hill or building with a tall antenna. You’ll still be limited by line of sight. But as long as everyone can see the repeater you’ll all be in communication.
