I LOVED this cheerful song when I was a kid but listening to it as an adult makes me want to cry.

You need to listen to the original, "Le Moribund" by Jacques Brel. Terry Jacks "cleaned up" the lyrics a bit to make them more playable on AM radio in 1973.

Brel wrote many excellent songs and was a talented entertainer. One of my favorites of his is "Jackie", sung here by Scott Walker. He later released an album of Brel songs he covered.

Was always told that this song's lyrics came from a suicide note. Never thought there was anything cheerful about it. It always gave me the creeps.

When I was a kid, all I remember hearing was: “We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun…”. And it was like HELL YEA PLAYING OUTSIDE KICKS ASS!

He's on his deathbed saying goodbye to those people in his life. In the original French lyrics, it's clear he also addresses the priest, who is taking his final confession.
