The guys in my local car repair shop were complaining about dishonest customers.

Then they quoted me outrageous prices for repairs I didn't need.

Mechanics like this piss me off and give all of us a bad name. Mechanics should take a Hippocratic oath for cars

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 21:18:37 ago (+2/-1)

I don't want any Hippocratic oath, just honest work. If a mechanic is making 140k, there is some sort of problem.

[ - ] uvulectomy 2 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 22:21:24 ago (+3/-1)

If a mechanic is making 140k, there is some sort of problem.

That reeks of leftist snobbery. "How dare some blue collar worker earn more than a meager subsistence! Filthy prole should know his place!"

Not saying a mechanic making 140k is automatically honest, but if he's putting in 60 hour weeks with no vacation time that's like $45/hour. Well within plausibility for a sole proprietor working his ass off and doing good work. Even taking two weeks off a year and working strictly 40 hours a week, that's $70/hour. Pretty sure you're gonna have a hard time finding a shop rate less than that.

Not a class issue, more like commentary on the labor market.

[ - ] iSnark 3 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 19:09:01 ago (+3/-0)

Sounds about right! I needed two tires replaced on my car, I have the replacement tires! I called around for quotes, I was quoted from $38USD to $100USD!

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 4 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 19:40:09 ago (+4/-0)

I got all the parts for maybe 300 bucks. Breaks, shocks, struts, bearing, wiper blades... Learning to repair cars was one of the most valuable skills I have ever learned. I don't know about engines but wheels are pretty easy at this point.

[ - ] bosunmoon 0 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 19:58:58 ago (+0/-0)

Keep at it. I don't mean to discourage, but you and iSnark sound ignorant and retarded.
Merry Christmas.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 3 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 20:14:20 ago (+3/-0)

Being ignorant is how I learn new things. Then I am not ignorant. See how that works? I know lots of things because I was ignorant once. Now 1700 for a break job chappie.

Found the blinker fluid salesman.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 3 points 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 21:07:02 ago (+3/-0)

I only get blinker fluid gold. The other stuff doesn't work as well.

[ - ] 2Drunk 1 point 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 14:16:33 ago (+1/-0)

Not platinum? I'm worried your car is going to turn into a bmw.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 16:50:58 ago (+0/-0)

That would be a nice upgrade.

[ - ] iSnark 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 16:21:03 ago (+0/-0)

Whatever you do... Make sure that your lighter fluid is topped-off, nothing worse than needing to light a Cigar, and having your lighter not work!

[ - ] iSnark 1 point 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 16:13:35 ago (+1/-0)

I'm actually very handy! I've been doing my own car maintenance since I was 17 years old, I actually worked in a full service gas station when I was a yooth! I've replaced Brake shoes & pads, Rotors, O2 sensors, changed spark plugs, blower motors, oil changes, replaced alternators, Timing belts, you name it, and these were done on a number of different types of cars from a `74 Olds Cutlass to my two BMW's...

I've gotten older, and I don't fell like fucking with things like I used to! Can I replace the tires, YES, If I can get it done for a fair & reasonable price, Why not?

I'm not buying what you're selling.

[ - ] iSnark 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 17:00:13 ago (+0/-0)

I'm not selling anything, I've done these things... Fuck off!

[ - ] bosunmoon 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 18:28:38 ago (+0/-0)

I changed a tire I'm handy hur dur.

[ - ] Belrial 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 09:02:00 ago (+0/-0)

$38 for mounting and balancing? That's an awesome deal. If you don't like it why don't you buy the equipment and mount and balance your own tires?

[ - ] iSnark 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 15:58:56 ago (+0/-0)

So $38 isn't a bad deal, I wanted to give the general range for quotes. I guess I was expecting most to focus on the upper-end of the quotes. For nothing more than mounting & balancing! The problem with buying things like the mounting & balancing equipment, is that, I would use it once maybe every 5 to 10 years, and it just sits around taking up space collecting dust. I can't tell you how many small tools I've bought only to realize that I already had one or multiples of...

[ - ] Belrial 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 18:53:08 ago (+0/-0)

Been there a LOT. IDK if you have Hibdon tires out there, but I priced tires, and their tires, mounted and balanced were only slightly more expensive than buying the tires myself, and doing the mounting and balancing if I did it free. Throw in the cost of the equipment, and unless I was running 40k miles a year I would take 8 years minimum to pay for even the cheapest Harbor Freight equipment. Now motorcycle tires are a radically different story. If you get 15k miles out of them you're doing excellent. My bike needs new tires at 6k miles (hopefully that will improve now that I'm replacing them with Sport Touring tires instead of the soft AF tires they install as OEM.

Here is where things get fun.

You're the weird one for not accepting that they just do that.
Fucked up right?

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 00:38:46 ago (+1/-0)

That is fucked up. Same people wear masks. I don't think I will ever fit in...

I see the same, we are wrong for being right.
I have unwittingly acquired the role my father played, the consistently non-compliant.

Dad used to embarrass me at Walmart by saying "No" to the receipt checker.
He told me, "I paid for it five feet away, if they want to try and tackle me over a boxfan, let them try"
They never stopped him, not once. He said No. It was small and petty but it stuck with me. It didn't matter, but at the same time it did matter. This collapsed the whole house of cards for me.

Deny the entire world it's claims on you, and you will be the devil to them, and that's OK.
They were gonna paint you red either way.

The worst part is, we cannot DECIDE to be like them, it simply is not possible.

Finding a good mechanic is like finding gold. I have a guy now who I feel like I’m ripping off every time I go, he “no charges” me all the time and does fantastic work at a reasonable cost. Life is too short to spend in bad company, just keep looking.

[ - ] iSnark 1 point 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 16:27:06 ago (+1/-0)

Maybe take care of him at Christmas, pop in with a card with good money in it, or find out what he drinks/smokes (legally) and hook him up!

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 4 monthsDec 21, 2024 20:46:43 ago (+1/-0)

If they believe that customers are dishonest, they feel justified in cheating them. Its what jews do. Its what niggers do. Its what feminists and MGTOWs do to the opposite sex. People will self hypnotize themselves of untrue beliefs to justify harming others. Its how the whole antiracist movement works and why its “victims” are so aggressive and psychopathic.

[ - ] puremadness 1 point 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 12:14:13 ago (+1/-0)

This is a most spot on comment.
Found myself under this bus more than once.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 12:31:03 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah people we might categorize as having Cluster B personality disorders are often the most dramatic “victims” because victimhood serves their interests by allowing them to be aggressive in socially acceptable ways. I feel that many of these people really believe they are victims. They blow minute offenses out of all proportion because they want to be aggressive. So many jews and blacks become professional victims for this very reason. They are good at it.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 07:59:20 ago (+0/-0)

everyones a victim!

[ - ] iSnark 0 points 4 monthsDec 22, 2024 16:30:10 ago (+0/-0)

I feel so incredibly victimized by your comment... do it again!!!
