I’ve never had one but I did grow up with one as a kid. I recall it being a 26 gallon, kind of a nice size. I remember some of the fish we had, groupers, Angel fish, tiger barbs, a few others. Seemed easy enough to do. Just wondering if any of you do this and if you have any advice for a beginner. I’m good with buying everything new, rather than online used crap. Any fish recommendations?
I have a friend who fell down that path. He had too much time on his hands and the hobby started to scale. Pretty soon, he’s asking you to help him pick up massive fish tanks he found for dirt cheap on Craigslist.
It’s sort of like upright pianos. You can find them for free but because they are a plague to move.
Pretty soon, your buddy tells you he’s done with the bullshit and as soon as the last exotic fish finally dies, he’s throwing it all out.
My other buddy started some years ago and accidentally bred a plague of snails.
Best advice I can give is to engage in the hobby vicariously. Spares you from the constantly recycling/cleaning of the water, rocks, and tanks.
Get a catfish and an algae eater. Guppies, platies, swordtails and tetras are easy. Gouramis are bigger and have great colors but don’t always get along if you mix varieties (golds in the same tank as dwarf or pearl gouramis). Blue rams are nice too. And chichlids. Lionfish are cool looking but finicky.
It can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it. 25 gallon fresh water tank is pretty simple to maintain though, probably a good place to start. Saltwater tanks are a labor of love and can get relatively expensive. You really kind of need to figure out what kind of ecosystem you want and work from there. After you square that away you can figure out exactly which fish will coexist, both with other fish and the ecosystem of the tank.
I have a few tanks, it can be a really enjoyable and rewarding hobby. I recommend a trying out a planted aquascape, it requires a bit more effort and money on the front end but it ends up being a lot easier by mostly regulating itself, will be more beautiful, and the fish will love it and be healthier for longer. for fish i would say really any freshwater tank is going to want otocinclus and corydoras by default then just get a school of something small and then a couple lookers. just look up info on the fish before you buy to make sure you can handle them
I'm going to start breeding goldfish to supplement my dog and cat's food. I'm pretty sure they will like it.
Also, I'm interested in doing some aquaculture. Building some filters that can turn fish poop into nutrients for an indoor lettuce farm.
I'll probably build a shelf that neatly stacks everything into one unit.
It'll be a good hobby for a retard like me.

I'm doing the opposite. I'm starting off with those plastic containers that you use to put cereal and dog food in to make them easier to store in the cupboard. With a series of tubes connecting the fish container with the filtration/garden units. That way it's expandable for just a few bucks.
Yes, but you can have some equally easy marine setups. Of course there's 1 additional step of periodically checking your salt. If you really wanted that lionfish or clown or something reasonable, it can be very easy. I still recommend you piss around with a fresh tank for a while, but you can realistically go either way.
The missus got me an oscar when we first met. We had him for like six or so years before he got some horrible disease and died and there was nothing we could do. So we never got another one.
That fish was awesome though. He'd always act all goofy and happy looking when I got home from work and I could stick my hand in the water and he'd nuzzle me like a cat. He'd bite my wife if she stuck her hand in, though. What a character.
We had a pond but were too poor for real koi so we stocked it with regular old goldfish and they got just about as big a koi, but that's different than an acquarium. And we never did build a pond at this we're in now.
Not an aquarium but I keep freshwater crayfish and little fish in my water troughs. Can't remember what the fish are called but they fuck up mosquitoes, and the crayfish clean the water and are nice to eat.

What size aquarium are you looking for? Plants? Invertebrates? You can have something visually appealing with very little effort.
