This is called "chuffing" and it's very normal for cats. My big male cat does it every time he sees a bird or squirrel. Tigers and lions do it too.

Current thought is: the chuffing brings in fresh air that the jacobsons organ processes while a cat is in hunting mode.
Humans have no idea what the jacobsons organ in a cat actually does, just speculation.
