I have a theory about Catholicism being designed to be obtuse intentionally. This forces any followers to depend on the priesthood to sort out the absurd nonsense and tell them the "important parts". Never forget that early priests were often very much like con men; the only guys in the town that could read. Who knows what was told to people?
