oh fucking computers need to be absolutely banned for the majority of school stuff.
we fast getting to the point where most kids will be functionally illiterate without some kind of fucking electronic assistance. yeah theyll be able to read letters and numbers and know that shit but they wont be able to use it on their own.
The computer has reinforced the mindset that “who cares if i know it, I can just look it up or ask shatgpt” Fuckin sad state of affairs. We teach our kids cursive for homeschooling. All work is done on paper and pencil.
i did a few hours as a student pilot and you absolutely had to learn the analogue stuff before you got to choose whether you wanted to play around with ... well still the same planes except one was all old analogue instruments and the fancier ones had them glass cockpits and stuff. long ass time ago tho, but the point still remains.
what happens to a student pilot who has only ever played around with the digital stuff when it fails for the first time and there isnt anyone around to help em out.

Hell wait tell you see your grandmother's stuff in shorthand.
You would think it's some kind of Babylonian or Sumerian hieroglyphics. And it's completely lost now. Shorthand was an amazing thing and frankly it'd be a great skill to know today. It lets you write things down as quickly as people say them.
well even then even my cheap mobile phone will instantly extract latin alphabet text in pretty much any font you can think of already, had fun playing with trying to translate a couple of sealed boxes with chinese writing someone had been given, was different types of tea but that didnt work well. probably a reason for that.
that didn't work well. probably a reason for that.
One of the biggest problems in getting robots/computers to do shit is that they can't see like you and me. There has been great work done in this sector, but it still isn't up to the task.
my mum used to leave me notes in pitmans shorthand when i was in primary school. never did catch on to any of it.
im a left hander that does a kind of lazy hybrid of joined cursive and block but ive been reading and writing since i was like 2 and a half or 3. well before i got to kindergarten.

My experience is almost identical. My mother knew Gregg shorthand, and would use it for personal notes and her grocery list. I'm also a lefty, so my cursive wasn't good. I switched to block letters in high school because it was quicker and easier. I was called out by one teacher and told to write cursive, but it was so bad she couldn't read it. After a couple weeks, she relented and let me do it my way.

Well, I never figured out whey you need two different and distintly separete styles to convey meaning. Printed letters work fine. Maybe someone here can enlighten me.
Cursive is easier and faster to write whilst still looking professional. In the world before printers, non-cursive had to be meticulously drawn in stylized fonts in order to look official. That was seen more often in pamplets and books, in which copyists painstakingly "printed" each letter to the standard they were told.
I have an app that will literally translate any language, in any type font. All you do is point the camera at any text and it almost instantly translates it using the same font, color and size of print. It can absolutely read cursive. Even human written cursive.
There was a demonstration of someone using chatgpt for that exact thing. They were literally demonstrating that it can read cursive better than humans. There was a very poorly written letter from a long time ago with some historical significance and had deteriorated on top of it. Chat gpt did a better job than any human short of a forensic investigator using special tools, and did it almost instantly.
