I’ve tried talking to all jail departments - nurses, admin , main line.
Some are sympathetic and say they will try to help, others are how you imagine power mad copschool dropouts are.
Learning experience for me. 23 days no communication.
A kind attorney spoke with me about the entire situation and basically said even HE is powerless over how his clients fair in jail. His advice is to lean on his PO to get info and an assessment of his health. Once we have some info, then the attorney can maybe take some action. Attorney spent about 20-25 minutes just understanding our situation and talking about how the jail system is really separate from the legal system.
We wait. Feels bad man.
Don’t go to jail goats.
Edit: you can pay for an inmate to have phone privileges. Several relatives have put money in his account. Still…nothing. I’m not convinced he’s mentally capable of using the system. Fuck.
I guess he lost it and bailed out on my mother who is special needs (drove on a revoked license).
I'm trying to pull together guardianship for my mother now and that seems to be panning out to be helpful - she's safe now - ended up doing a wellness check on her after dad left - wasn't good, EMTs took her.
The jail news about my dad I just received today about him not being coherent. Scary because he is in gen pop and might get into trouble by just saying something dumb.
Everything failed all at once for them. It's going to be hard to patch this together.
It really fucking sucks at the moment. I have two brothers that refuse to help. Also, an uncle (my dad's brother) who is just not responding. I feel like I'm the only one who cares. Rough
Best you can do is not turn out like him. You can't change what's before him now. I do not believe in accidents, there is purpose in everything because everything is by design and is over watched by the same. Takes folks an entire life to figure it out most often.
Call about the polices for contacting inmates with Alzheimer's.
Many jails have medical staff Share his memory problems, Korsakoff syndrome and call for an urgent evaluation. Explain how the conditions he suffers from may make him unable to remember or follow rules.
And if they are given any special consideration
Ask if the facility allows phone calls, video calls, or messages through JPay Securus or others
Notify the facility of the special needs status and request special assistance to help facilitate communication, Some facilities will remove such individual out of the general population.
Contact an attorney in the area Request leave on medical grounds Resolve charges of revoked license Advocate for proper care in custody
Or contact Local Legal Aid Organizations - low cost or free
I've only been the one incarcerated (btw your story reminds me I need to seek revenge on someone) but I think your best bet is to be nice and work through whatever channels they have open. Don't stress over what you can't control because the people who compromise the injustice system will not be motivated by sympathy for anyone's conditions, right or wrong, or literally anything at all other than their paycheck. From the janitors to the judges its all a self serving system that needs people to be labeled as "criminals".
Just stay calm and realize they don't give a fuck and won't so much as take a minute off their lunch to save your life. The system has a vacuum energy (literally why your dad's there now). The sooner you realize the entire system is composed of individual people only serving their own needs the sooner you'll be able to see how to get your dad out of the situation. Just realize what they do down there has absolutely nothing to do with Justice.
One thing you need to understand is that almost everyone in jail lies to try to get out. Faking dementia is common.
Another thing you need to understand is that any guard who cares has a short career. So nobody who works there cares or believes anything you or your dad says.
That is possible. He could be doing a "One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest" move.
However, he is a full blown alcoholic that has been diagnosed with Korsakoff syndrome in the past. He's also has his share of brain injuries due to falls. All of those have resolved - but it all takes it's toll.
He makes sense generally when I talk with him, but there is a sense of diminished quality of thought.
His biggest problem is with authority, he hates consequences. But he can't connect breaking rules with the subsequent effects. Hard to watch.
He's on a suspended sentence. Multiple DUIs. Never hurt anyone thank god. When he's not drinking he is useful and industrious - amazing woodworking and imagination - even at 70. When he drinks he's useless.
He had open heart surgery after a mild heart attack and was just about two months away from completing parole. About 2 weeks after his successful surgery - he drank and got caught.
It's unclear at the moment if the state is going to enforce the full 2 year sentence. It's a component to maybe why he bailed out on everything - but it could have been simple to stay put and do a week in jail. Now it's completely a different situation.
Oh so sorry to hear that. Basically he’s just there because he’s an alcoholic. So terrible. I have a lot of sympathy, having been an alky myself.
Wish I could contribute some useful legal advice, but Im out of my depth. I just think pushing for a medical assessment of his state is important to get any special consideration.
My mom had dementia and I thought her decline would be more rapid but it was pretty slow.
Dont many Jails/ Prisons have policies of accepting visitors only after first having been 'authorized' by the detainee?. Not sure how that helps if the detainee is somewhat non compos mentis or incoherent.

Second, lawyer. Look for young bro-bono types that can earn a stripe by helping you.
Be bold, do not take no, and never admit defeat.
