I work in engineering and we use it. Do you think it should have more widespread use? Are you happy with gallons and miles or would you prefer litres and kilometres?
Metric system is much more accurate especially the smaller you go. When you're measuring in hundredths of a mm you would be in the thousands of an inch which is not as accurate.
Well in the public schools in the 70s they beat into our heads that the US would be converting to metric. It never happened. But now I can use either. The only thing that pisses me off, is when I’m trying to work on an American car and it has Metric and English fasteners in it. Use one or the other people!

That being said, there are uncountable amounts of money in existing dies for manufacturing, and molds for building and industry that will not comply. Pick up a Machinery's handbook and flip through it.
The definition of the inch is 25.4mm. So America is already metric, it just converts everything into stupid units. Every time this conversation comes up, most people claim their way is better, simply because they are used to it. I'm machinist and use both. Metric is more intuitive and has less chance for error. I have also dome some construction and helped built a few houses in Canada and Germany. The constant math and conversions and formulas need with the imperial measuring system is very inefficient and has far to much chance for error.
Metric system for distance (metres) and weight (grams). Kelvin and Celcius for temperature (one is objective, the other most relevant to humans, who are made of water).
It has its preferred uses imo. Distance, speed, mass & volume are easy to work with the metric system.
When it comes to fabrication, whether it's a house or a trailer, imperial is 100x faster to work with. I'll work with inches & fractions over tens of thousands of millimeters anytime.
