Recently I got my first prescription sunglasses and I'm gushing with convert enthusiasm. Delighted at the way they reduce glare. I've never used sunglasses much 'cos they made me look a dork (imo) and while they still do...I'm old now and it doesn't matter. But I'm curious to know your experience so that I get some idea of how out-of-step I may have been with the rest of humanity. Where I'm really annoyed with myself is that these glasses may significantly reduce glare when driving which could make driving a lot safer when blinded by the sun. Cheap (non-prescription) sunglasses didn't seem to do much in this situation.
Edit: just dawned on me that not everyone wears glasses and so cheap non-prescription sunnies might be fine for them? But maybe more expensive sunglasses, even though not containing prescription lenses, have more effective lenses for reducing glare?

I had photo sun prescription glasses when I went into the army. They somehow became my official glasses, and the drill sergeants hated them. "Get down and give me 50, Hollywood!"
Sunglasses are bad for you. Your eyes need the direct UV light stimulation to trigger serotonin release in your brain which improves your mood and your thinking. You spend enough time indoors without sunlight and then you finally get outside into what your body has evolved into liking and you want to block it.
Besides if your eyes don't focus correctly the natural way your eyes correct themselves is when the defocused UV light hits the retina it causes your eyeball to actually begin to reshape itself so that the light that hits your retina has more contrast which is a result of it being improper focus. In other words your eyes can correct their own errors over time if the light to your eyes is not blocked. This is especially true for small children which is why it's really not a great idea to give small children eyeglasses in the beginning and you absolutely should never let them where eyeglasses outdoors in natural sunlight because their eyes do not have the ability to correct their bad vision if the UV light is blocked.
Too long didn't read version if God thought you'd be light was bad for your eyes you'd have built-in sunglasses
You aren't wrong, but sometimes we have to put ourselves in uncomfortable situations to accomplish things. When I am forced to drive all day, and I am wearing contact lenses, I get a wicked headache without some sort of glare reducing sunglasses. Same goes for spending all day out in a boat fishing on a sunny day.
I think tools can be used appropriately and moderately, and they can also be used a crutch in an unhealthy way. Cars are also negative for a lot of people because they encourage laziness and slothfulness, but there are times when I absolutely need to use them.
Check out Luenx. It's the best off-brand I have found, with amazing polarization, mirrored finish, and 400uv rating, all for about $20 USD.
The only downside is that the mirrored finish scratches off pretty easily if you let them bang around in a bag without a case. But for $20, when I lose or wreck a pair, I just pull out another. It will take me 40 pairs to equal the cost of 1 pair of Oakleys/etc.

You want to know how smart of a spender I am? I refinanced to a 1.75% 15-year on my house so now it costs the bank more to pay a nigger to sit and answer my call than I pay in interest.

I have worsening eyes and have worn glasses for years. I was able to make do with non-prescription sunglasses for a while - but recently it became hard to read tape measures and gauges outside.
I got a cheap pair of prescription sunglasses online - they work just like regular glasses, great.
I had them on a lanyard so that I could take them off and just have them hang on my neck when going inside and outside.
Now....one day....I hang the prescription sunglasses on the rear view mirror in my car using said lanyard at the end of the day for the weekend. They hang all sunny weekend - burning a fucking stripe 1/4" wide across the passenger side seat as the sun moved from east to west. Looked like a weld.
The expensive ones like Serengetti are very nice, but you can get very cheap ones with the exact same quality lenses. You're still paying mostly for the brand name.
They make all these lenses in China for pennies. It's just about finding the correct cheap ones (definitely not the gas station variety).
If you're interested in a deep dive on the topic, you need to start by reading about Luxottica. They are basically a cartel that controls 90% of brands in the industry and artificially keeps the prices very high across the board. From Oakley to RayBan, they own them all, and they are all made very cheaply in China and sold at outrageous markups worldwide.
There are many cases of this. They prey on honest consumers who expect price is related to quality in SOME way.
Even old trustworthy brands have been bought out and hollowed out. Modern powertools are another example. Brands like Makita used to be made in Japan from quality parts. Now they come out of the same Chinese garbage factory as every other tool, and they slap the Makita label on them and ship them out.
You are conflating prescription (which is for correcting your eyesight) with polarized (which is for reducing/eliminating glare).
You can always buy non-prescription, polarized sunglasses. And they can also be cheap.
The only bonus of prescription sunglasses is that you don't need to wear contact lenses to use them.
A third option is sunglasses that actually go over top of your existing glasses. I keep a pair in the car, but they are bulky and uncomfortable if used for long periods.
I wear a certain style of Panama Jacks. I also buy the HD contrasted to my specifications from Hong Kong and sometimes Japan. They make every day bright and sunny even if its rainy and if you see something like an oil leak or whatever on the road it glows bright. Its wild.
I break and lose sunglasses all the time, so I buy cheap ones from Safety Glasses USA. They have a large variety, and most are rated for riding motorcycles, workshop, and construction safety.

Isn't there some room for thoughtful usage?

Just a warning - lenses have a lensing effect.

I wanted some mono chromatic that were polarized and you just don't get that with cheap ones. I ended up with a pair from this company.
Wow. Holy shit. I'm never going back to the cheapos, ever. Ordered another pair last year.
