"There was great excitement among F[ührer]. and Himmler, who was with him, about the allocation of division pastors to the SS police division. Biting remarks about military chaplaincy. The pastors are divisive and troublemakers, hidden reactionaries who abuse faith to fish in troubled waters. One must consider abolishing chaplaincy altogether. Clergymen should serve as drivers rather than pastors. Warm words about Bishop Dohrmann, about whom we know what circles he moves in and how closely connected he is with the Confessing Church. Those were the words of Himmler, who also said that no one would be accepted into the SS unless they had proven that they had left the church. F[ührer]. was not quite so harsh, but did not hold back on biting remarks either, especially against the Protestant Church, which had become a threat to the state at that time."
When this matter was brought up again to Hitler by Bormann in 1940, Engel noted that Hitler waved it off due to the current circumstances:
"These things were probably not yet ripe, and despite his [Hitler's] well-known attitude towards priests, he would not change anything at the moment."
