Do you (or spouse) shop by meal or by ingredients?

submitted by Gowithit to AskUpgoat 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 07:27:47 ago (+13/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

I understand with prices as they are right now might force some into shopping one way or another. If thats the case... then would you rather shop by meal or ingredients?

By meal, ideally. My wife isn't allowed to go grocery shopping anymore. I do all the cooking, so I make really precise shopping lists. She doesn't use a list. She'll go to the store for cat food and come out two hundred bucks later having purchased nothing of value. Drives me insane.

[ - ] Jewpacabra 6 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:17:08 ago (+6/-0)

I do the same, but it was the sporting goods store and I only went in to get fish hooks.

[ - ] dassar 0 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 16:20:40 ago (+0/-0)

Yea, can relate - several times have gone to a store for a specific thing, get home after purchased a whole bunch of other stuff and forgot what i had actually gone there for. Drives me half-retarded.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 07:51:35 ago (+5/-2)

Have you ever asked her if there was a method to her madness?

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 7 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:03:11 ago (+7/-0)

I know the method. She grew up in a family that was in the 1% of her county in terms of wealth. She's never gone a few days without eating, and her and I understand the value of a dollar differently.

I was born poor, you are new to this lifestyle. I shall show you the way!

[ - ] SecretHitler 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 13:30:11 ago (+4/-0)

you merely adopted the poor. I was born in it, molded by it...

OMG i laughed hard at this.

She's an optimist. Good for her. Lucky for you.

That made me laugh!

[ - ] Peleg 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:02:52 ago (+1/-0)

Don't set there and pretend there is a "method" to it. Mine has already admitted that she doesn't have a clue to what she is grabbing. She's just trying to hurry up and get out of the store. Lol

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:08:54 ago (+2/-0)

The method is mood. What she might expect the week to look like how she's feeling (light, stressed etc..)

[ - ] Peleg 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 09:59:55 ago (+3/-0)

I don't let mine do much shopping anymore either. She's a little different than yours but still so aggravating! She runs through the store not looking at anything just grabbing "something" here and there. She gets out and has nothing from our list and nothing that will feed us! Crazy.

Gay

[ - ] WNwoman 10 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:30:16 ago (+10/-0)

Both. I buy staples every trip for ingredients I use in meals I frequently make. If I’m trying a new recipe or my family has requested something in particular I’ll shop by meal.

[ - ] Fishsticksforever 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:04:31 ago (+2/-0)

Ditto

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 14:55:51 ago (+1/-0)

Yup. I mostly have a set of things I eat. However, I like to make something different from time to time so I'll go specifically shopping for that meal.

[ - ] Sector2 6 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:30:07 ago (+6/-0)

By ingredients. I've never shopped for a meal.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 09:01:21 ago (+4/-1)

The untamable/untameable spirit.

The auto correct keeps underlining the word. you want to see something interesting?

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/93wked0r.png

I'm being gaslit.

Anyhow, do you find it a luxury to shop by ingredient or just normal?

[ - ] Sector2 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:32:59 ago (+3/-0)

Isn't it normal to buy a supply of ingredients to make food? Then you see what you have in the fridge when you're ready to eat. I usually don't eat by meal anyway.

[ - ] dassar 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 16:24:50 ago (+1/-0)

Depends, if you have a set menu/ meal in mind when buying i guess-
My boys love spaghetti bolognaise - so i make a point of purposely buying meal portioned ingredients for it.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 17:08:31 ago (+0/-0)

Ah, it's just me and I mostly just eat when I'm hungry. Two bacons and two eggs in the morning is my one consistent meal. After that I pretty much just graze on whatever I have when I'm hungry, and rarely in 'meal' form. I mostly serial cook instead of parallel cooking.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:09:45 ago (+4/-0)

Both.

[ - ] Panic 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 09:54:16 ago (+4/-0)

My wife has a calendar, a schedule for a month of meals. Most items are the same on each particular day of the week, with exceptions only for when dining out or with friends.

"For example:
Monday breakfast is omelets with strawberry jelly on toast.
Tuesday: Breakfast is breakfast burritos.
Wednesday is fried eggs with sausage or bacon, grits and toast.
Thursday is Cheerios or Raisin bran cereal.
Friday is omelets again and toast.
Saturday is pancakes.
Sunday is oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins.

Always and forever.

Similarly, we do this for lunch and dinner. Makes shopping a breeze and budgeting always predictable.

In the old days, we had to go shopping and kept buying just this and that, then endlessly discuss what we'd have for each meal. Now we are so organized that all we have to do is remember what day of he week it is as we wake up. So damned easy.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:12:43 ago (+3/-0)

I wish. Ive tried but the husband would just go buy outside food if it was the same thing every day

mine would look like

rice
meat
potato

always and forever

if I was allowed

[ - ] Fishsticksforever 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:06:48 ago (+1/-0)

That sounds nice, I'm not a picky eater so a rotating menu would make meal time much easier.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:01:19 ago (+4/-0)

I go to the new Walmart (very clean) at 6 am, right when they open. I race up and down the aisles, just snatching random shit off the shelves. In and out under 10 minutes. Get home, and realize I forgot several important items. I had a shopping list, but left it at home.

[ - ] Peleg 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:09:39 ago (+4/-0)

Are you my wife!? Cause that's Exactly what she does!

[ - ] Anus_Expander 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 12:08:23 ago (+3/-0)

Yes, we meet in the parking lot

[ - ] Peleg 0 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 19:10:47 ago (+0/-0)

Hi Honey.

[ - ] bobdole9 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:30:12 ago (+4/-0)

8am to 10am is the "sensory hours" where the music is off and no bullshit ads or screens.

Same in and out, but in quiet. Some old ducks, but none of the "disableds" are out shopping yet.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 12:07:06 ago (+2/-0)

I go early to avoid niggers, even tho none live in my area 😅

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:16:11 ago (+4/-1)

This comment is a whole therapy session in itself.

No system is perfect, but I have yet to starve.

[ - ] Ragnar 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:19:43 ago (+2/-0)

This is the way to be.
Except never Walmart

[ - ] Anus_Expander 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 12:07:51 ago (+1/-0)

a new one is a 3 minute drive from me, in a White area. They only have food.

[ - ] jfroybees 0 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 12:07:37 ago (+0/-0)

Walmart and Costco food is shit.

[ - ] SecretHitler 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 13:28:10 ago (+3/-0)

I shop by ingredients (always have), she shops by meal. She does all the cooking. I'll admit shopping by meal makes more sense.

Money doesn't factor into this decision.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 09:16:19 ago (+3/-0)

We've always had a healthy stock of ingredients but we shop by meal, however, we can make any 4-5 different meals at any time.

[ - ] Steelerfish 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:38:05 ago (+3/-0)

I’ll buy whatever protein is on sale and looks good and build around it.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:11:39 ago (+3/-0)

“Protein”? It’s called meat.

[ - ] Ragnar 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:15:59 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks

[ - ] SecretHitler 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 13:33:06 ago (+2/-0)

Can also be fish.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 22:48:40 ago (+1/-0)

Which is meat. It’s not tofu, which is what faggots using the term “protein”, mean.

[ - ] gardella 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:07:59 ago (+2/-0)

We keep staples, spices, eggs, cream, cheese, steaks, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, bananas, and in season fruit, in stock at home, then buy per meal if we feel like something different

[ - ] Fishsticksforever 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:02:49 ago (+2/-0)

I shop by what I want or what's on sale, and make food based upon what I wind up with. Usually it's whatever meat is on sale and I'll add a side or two. Sometimes I want to make a specific meal, but that's not often other than breakfast.

[ - ] mannerbund 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:03:01 ago (+2/-0)

We shop for ingredients for things that have a decent shelf life; by meal for things that do not have a shelf life.

We tend to have a fully stocked pantry, deep pantry, multiple freezers, and a ton of freeze dried meals. Looking to get a freeze drier so we don't have to use the 'local' one though.

Wife does the shopping, I tend to ignore prices and put things in a cart. She's somewhat thrifty and tries to save the money at least.

Shopping by ingredient I think is cheapest as you know what you are low on and can look for price breaks on it, then your meals you plan around what you have on hand.

[ - ] GrayDragon 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 09:43:01 ago (+2/-0)

I create a list targeting both meals and long-lasting ingredients that are close to running out. Although now that we have Crazy Ukrainian, it is almost exclusively ingredients. I also sometimes do a few impulse buys, particularly for super sale items, but never many.

[ - ] FreeinTX 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 07:38:56 ago (+2/-0)

By meal, carefully choosing the ingredients.

[ - ] iSnark 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 07:36:14 ago (+2/-0)

Both

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 07:50:17 ago (+2/-0)

Such an ass😆

The question stems from https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2025/01/23/exclusive-georgia-lt-gov-burt-jones-launches-state-level-doge/

@mastersupressiontechnique 's article that led me to look at who exactly is Georgias top job creators because

The bill will also give legislators the ability to request a “Small Business Impact Analysis” for pending legislation to better understand how a bill might impact Georgia’s most important job creators.

was mentioned in it and FreshRealm popped up and this is their goal. Meal kits for the masses.

https://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2021/07/22/US-chilled-prepared-food-market-ripe-for-disruption-says-FreshRealm-after-raising-32m-to-build-national-infrastructure-for-fresh/

so of course the un agenda 2030 senses started to tingle and I wanted to see how far up shits creek we are.

I used to shop by meal and have been making an effort to buy "by ingredients" the past year so that I have options and workarounds.

[ - ] iSnark 3 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:13:18 ago (+3/-0)

"Such an ass😆"

Well now I know that God is Merciful because he didn't make us Husband & Wife... ;-) You gave me a laugh Gowie... Thank You!

I was however, being truthful! I get a list with a section where I buy specific ingredients for specific recipes. The items are itemized and grouped to make sure that I don't forget any of the items needed to complete the dish/meal. It's a computer generated list.

There's also one-off stuff on the list that are staple items that are not part of a specific recipe. For instance, general on-hand spices, toilet paper, peanut butter, beer, wine, Yeast, Flour, Heavy Cream. Fruit, Lunch meat, etc...

With the economy as it has been, we have cut back on the larger meals and go for more crock-pot Ninja cooker meals.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:24:13 ago (+1/-0)

Computer generated list

fascinating. my oldest was talking about making "genre specific" grocery lists and I asked "who would buy/use those?" so this *is" a thing. hm. Its a whole new world out there.

is the computer generated list program you use just a personal one you use and input your own menus and inventory in or is it a general use for public one?

[ - ] iSnark 4 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 08:49:35 ago (+4/-0)

It's not that complicated really, there's no intelligence built into the spread sheet, it's just a basic manual spreadsheet.

As the list is created, items are grouped under the same code next to all the items for a specific meal, and We just sort against the code, and it puts all the like codes together, and everything else is tagged "SANR" Stand Alone Non-Recipe.

So the list looks like this:

KEY
LE= Lasagna
CI= Chili
CNS= Chicken Noodle Soup (Homemade)

So when the list gets sorted it looks like this:

Code: Ingredient:
CI Black Beans
CI Celery
CI Hot Sauce
CNS Whole Chicken
CNS Broth
CNS Celery
LE Lasagna
LE Tomato Paste
LE Ricotta
SANR Beer
SANR Wine
SANR Apples
SANR Bananas

I find it helpful in making sure that I actually prioritize recipe items and NOT decide to leave them off the list while I'm shopping, they essentially take priority...

Hope this was useful

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 2 points 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:15:43 ago (+2/-0)

This is rain man level of list making.

Ingredients.
We should do it based on meal, but it's a discipline my wife has never adopted and I don't do the shopping, so...

[ - ] Swej_Ehtsag 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 12:41:12 ago (+1/-0)

I only eat about 20 different things since almost everything at the store is filled with seed oils, animals that were fed seed oils, have Natural Flavoring™, ingredients that aren't food, ground vegetables covered in animal feces, sugar, and Sugar Substitutes™.

Shopping is quick and easy, meal prep is quick and easy, and I get the added bonus of filling energized after eating instead of lethargic with brain fog.

[ - ] NeverHappened 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:42:34 ago (+1/-0)

This was an interesting thread to read others responses.
I would go insane with meal planning, especially the specific rotating plans but many seem to enjoy that method.
I buy the staples and whatever is on sale. We make what we feel like based on what we have. We do not eat 3 squares around here, not even the kids. Makes it both easier and harder sometimes.

[ - ] NaturalSelectionistWorker 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:21:49 ago (+1/-0)

Mostly by meal unless it's ingredients I know I'll use repeatedly.

[ - ] Ragnar 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 10:14:24 ago (+1/-0)

Go back to Mexico and you won’t even have a list

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 1 point 4 monthsJan 24, 2025 11:02:45 ago (+1/-0)

You are right. Thinking back my grandparents nor I shopped by meal in P.R.. It was by ingredient. By meal must be a very "american" trait as the article that brought about the question says it is.

https://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2021/07/22/US-chilled-prepared-food-market-ripe-for-disruption-says-FreshRealm-after-raising-32m-to-build-national-infrastructure-for-fresh/

I plan all our meals for two weeks, shop by ingredients I need. No extras except my beloved sparkling water.
