My thermometer showed -40°F for a low this morning. By Monday it is supposed to be in the 50Fs for the daytime high.

So global warming then.

Climate change will continue until morale improves.

It's the 4th time in a single year the weather changes. Same thing happened before. It's all broken.
Where do I pay an get my earf fixed?

[ - ] Her0n 5 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 11:25:01 ago (+5/-0)

I can ensure you all that at least ONE fucker living in that region decided to walk barefoot to get their mail, losing toes to frostbite in the process.

I know a local guy who constantly walks around in flip-flops without socks. When it gets cold like this he wears socks.

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 12:21:40 ago (+2/-0)

A guy from California wore flipflops and sometimes shorts in the snow around campus.

[ - ] Her0n 2 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 12:38:32 ago (+2/-0)

I'll never understand those people. I don't mind the cold at all, but I do mind frostbite.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 14:48:37 ago (+1/-0)

Eh, you don't get frostbite as long as you're healthy and not out for all that long. Makes me laugh at the other people who go crazy over it though. Walk like you're in no hurry, get your mail/food/whatever, get back inside, dry your feet, and put on the slippers. Enjoy the comments later.

Pretty sure that guy was a surfer from southern California who had never worn anything else. He probably adjusted to his new reality eventually.

Weather man says I lose my toes after two minutes of exposure...I could sprint the drive and back before then...

"Challenge accepted"

[ - ] Nosferatjew 2 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 12:24:40 ago (+2/-0)

Welp, I guess winter is over.

Day 2/18 61°Hi RealFeel® 63°

As a kid, school closed when it hit -30. Mid 20s, had enough of that nonsense.

It's probably good for kids to grow up in extreme weather conditions. It culls the weak and calibrates expectations.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 19:14:24 ago (+1/-0)

Well, it seems to have a eugenic effect on populations.

[ - ] con77 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 13:31:28 ago (+1/-0)

Do people go to work or school when it's like that?

[ - ] Consensus_Reality [op] 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 14:25:58 ago (+1/-0)

Oh yeah—the White ones anyway. I oftentimes have to perform work outside in weather like this. Shit needs to get done.

I am humbled.

Now ask me about wind chill....

[ - ] jfroybees 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 15:07:42 ago (+0/-0)

The coldest I have ever been even with wind chill was -11 and that was only one night. I lived in a state that doesn't usually have those temps, so I discovered that one must have the right gear, great home insulation and all the other things associated with extreme cold. I cannot imagine working in negative anything.

[ - ] Consensus_Reality [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 15:16:32 ago (+0/-0)

One must adapt and overcome. Wind chill for tonight is expected to be -60°F or less.

Speaking of home insulation. The part of my house where the kitchen is located was built in 1953. I don't know what kind of insulation is in the walls, but when it gets -10°F (or lower) outside I have to open the cupboard door next to the dishwasher so that the water lines to it don't freeze. These lines are not in the wall mind you; they are coming up through the floor right behind the washer.

Drip the faucets, do ya?

[ - ] Consensus_Reality [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 15:27:57 ago (+0/-0)

No. I don't have any other problems besides the dishwasher. Opening the door lets more heat reach the pipes behind the dishwasher and keeps them from freezing.

[ - ] Bassman9000 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 15:23:51 ago (+1/-0)

Ya, and they're called plumbers. When it gets this cold plumbers don't stop working. Pipes freeze and break all over the place.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 16:26:48 ago (+1/-0)

Northerners plug in their engine block heaters so transportation and work is still possible.

Really fuckin' unplesant but possible

[ - ] Leveraction 1 point 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 12:46:35 ago (+1/-0)

Were right next to you. Currently at -10. Tonight -30. Good news, our high tmrw will be plus 5. Yippee!

It's been like that for a week now here

[ - ] Puller_of_Noses 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 16:55:00 ago (+0/-0)

-40?
Is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?

edit: look it up

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 19:16:01 ago (+0/-0)

Spoiler: they converge at -40

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 16:27:45 ago (+0/-0)

How bad is the wind speed?

I'd do the boiling snow trick once and call it good.

[ - ] Not_C 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 16:21:23 ago (+0/-0)

A North Dakota resident wakes up. Adjusts their turban.
Goes outside and says, "Hola" to their neighbor.
Drives to their favorite Ethiopian restaurant.
The whole time not understanding why it's so cold.

They see one of the few Americans still in town who hasn't died of obesity, diabetes, or the clot shot. The American says, "Yes it gets cold here in February. It's called winter. Go back to Mexico or wherever the fuck you're from. No one wants to hear your whining."

[ - ] jfroybees 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 14:40:13 ago (+0/-0)

No no no no no no no no no no noooooo! Nope. Never.

[ - ] BoozyB 0 points 2 monthsFeb 18, 2025 13:24:55 ago (+0/-0)

It was -27°F where I am this morning.
