Update to possum shooting from last night

submitted by TheOriginal1Icemonkey to whatever 3 monthsFeb 20, 2025 06:55:20 ago (+18/-1)     (whatever)

I went back out for another look after posting the sighting. Dude was out hanging with my two orange cats, picking stuff out of the grass.
I couldn’t do it. Left him alone. Then, I see him go under the house through one of the foundation vent holes that is missing a screen. I’m thinking there is a nest of these fuckers under there. I need to root them out. Glad I didn’t shoot him though.
Thank you all for your comments.

Both a source of food in times of need and a tick eating machine. What's not to like?

It's best to leave them be, if your cats do the same then no issues will pop up.

I wouldn't advise adopting the animal, just ignore it. Once it's babies grow up it'll leave most likely.

They won't really bother anything. They're under there eating all the bugs and snakes. They're good friends to have

Good choice. Definitely make sure they are all out of there, I had one trapped in my garage many years ago and they chewed the fascia of my garage to get out.

I don't live around possums.
Why do you want to shoot it?

Shooting wildlife just seems nigger tier unless you are hunting.

Opossums are good for pest control, they are cool little animals, don't kill it it won't hurt your cat or you. They may hiss but have weak jaws, if they bite it wouldn't be bad.

My sister had a pet possum. She fed the thing so much that it got so friggin fat, it's eyes went cross-eyed. She would pick it up and it would grit it's yeller teeth and hiss like it would bite your dick off, but she would tickle the thing on its' belly, set it down and feed it until it looked like it might pop

Don't touch it, don't shoot it unless it's tried to hurt you cats or other animals. Opossums aren't really verminous enough to worry about, they eat trash and small pests. They eat a LOT of ticks, and that means those ticks aren't on you or your cats.

There's a time to take an animal out, and there's a time to stay your hand. That's your responsibility as a man, one of the stewards of the earth.

watch out for the rabies.

also watch out for the flea colonies that will form under your house in a few week once the weather turns a bit warmer if there is a nest. They'll come up through he floorboards...

Possums eat ticks.

Possums rarely catch rabies, very insanely strong immune system. Just watch for the symptoms and shoot it if she gets aggressive or too territorial.

I think the reason is because their body heat is too low for rabies to survive.

That's interesting, I did that know that was why. I just assumed it was the immune system working alone.

possums do absolutely not carry or contract rabies. theyre immune
