Marxists see a linear progression from Cromwell, to Robespierre, to Lenin. This is the same superficiality that sees Christianity as a form of Bolshevism. Very different ideas involved in all of this.

Cromwell was trying to set up a morally fairly strict godly commonwealth with Puritan generals running England under what devolved into a military dictatorship. It worked. As long as he was alive. His inept son squandered his inheritance and inertia set in. Charles II, who got his ass kicked by Cromwell, ascended to the throne.

In terms of effects the Cromwell experience traded in the supremacy of the king for the supremacy of parliament. Both bullshit systems properly assessed.
