In a time of war, the term of presidency can be extended in order to maintain chain of command.

Discuss.

edit: damn Mandela effect

No such provision is established by the Constitution, nor has Congress passed a law attempting to permit it anyway. So in a legal sense, no, your claim is 100% false.

Now in a practical sense, any president could suspend the Constitution, dissolve Congress and declare himself Dictator for Life. But that's just called civil war. The only question at that point is how lopsided are the battle lines. If the entire standing army and all the states say no, he's a paper tiger, Congress will meet anyway to impeach and convict him, and the military would arrest him. On the other hand, if the move is popular and seen as necessary by the military, it would play out more or less like the dozens of similar South American coups where there is some armed republican resistance but the actual fighting is a rout and nothing any judge or elected official says about the move has any force of arms behind it.

But again, that's no different that someone who isn't the president declaring himself dictator for life, regardless of whether we're at war or not. As far as being in a war being a legal reason to extend a sitting president's term and not hold elections, no. No such law exists, constitutional or otherwise.

Absolutely correct. We even had presidential elections during the Civil War. Good post.

Well I just looked it up and it seems you are correct.

I would have sworn my civics class back in high school taught things differently.

Mandela effect?

no, you just think that the president had that power. they can suspend right of citizens, remember the japanese interment camps during world war 2?

but anyhow, i dont think we are going to be in world war three anytime soon. russia and china are taking it easy with the failure of brics

iran is a third world country with oil which population lives in a great amount of poverty and all the top govt honchos, teh mullahs have bank accts in switzerland

the only one that could have been a trigger was syria and al assad is no longer in power and that country is in taters too. lebanon is just a small country with a quasi army with obsolete weaponry. jordan, saudi and others in the gulf are pro american and pro israel. the houthis are just a rebel group with some drone and rocket weaponry but they lack a true command and control center to do anything plus the rest of country is in tatters too

you tell me where this mythical world war three will come from? isreal is not going to nuke itself in to smithereens, they are terrible ppl but not stupid. so the only challenger is erdogan of turkey but he is under the boot of NATO and the west. so who is going to start it??? the tooth fairy or santa claus lol

There is that small matter of his age, which could significantly reduce the length of 'indefinite'.
