It's more an invitation to discussion. Honest Abe raised 75,000 troops. I know he bribed just off the boat krauts and micks. Foreigners made up half the Union army. I know there were Northern militants like the Wide Awakes. I know Northern soldiers were promised a quick, relatively painless war. But I'm still perplexed that a minority POTUS (he got less than 40% of the popular vote) and extremely polarizing figure like Lincoln - polarizing even north of the Mason-Dixon line, could raise enough troops to invade the South.

I am guessing, but I imagine it's not so different from today. Monied interests that owned the papers and railroads and banks wanted to make sure they stayed in charge, so they brought out the United we stand bullshit.
