Germanophobia and genocidal hatred of Germanic people has been rampant and unchecked for a long time, especially after WWII. There are probably thousands of extinct Germanic family lines as a result of that. And the mass diaspora from that and the fall of the Prussian empire prior to that. People changed their official family history to shield themselves from the hatred. Some starting calling themselves Polish and other nationalities instead of their true German heritage. USA's second most popular language used to be German. That all changed.

But what about the genocided family lines?

Who is left to mourn for those dead? Who is left to hold the genociders accountable? Awareness is always key.
