The old naming scheme of "Muhammadan" was essentially driven by the idea that you name heresies after their creator (e.g. "Arians" from "Arianus", "Lutheran" after "Luther", etc.). It's a tradition that goes back to the Church fathers.

In that light, you could loosely interpret that religion to be a type of heresy from Christianity (Muhammad created his religion in response to Christianity and Talmudism).

With that logic you could also claim that Talmudism is a type of Christian heresy (it came after Christianity), and that neo-atheism is a Christian heresy as well.

Categorizing as types of heretical Christianity doesn't have much good utility, but you could make the argument nonetheless.

But, like I said, to call Muslims a type of heretical Christian is to also call Talmudists a type of heretical Christian.
