Kerouac and alternative lifestyles

submitted by Joe_McCarthy to OccidentalEnclave 7 hoursMay 12, 2025 16:35:17 ago (+3/-1)     (OccidentalEnclave)

AI Overview

Jack Kerouac's writings, particularly "On the Road," advocate for a counter-cultural lifestyle characterized by freedom, spontaneity, and a rejection of mainstream societal norms. This "Dharma Bum" lifestyle, as presented in The Dharma Bums, involves embracing homelessness, travel, temporary work, and a focus on writing and meditation. It encourages embracing the chaotic and unpredictable nature of life, much like Kerouac's own journey.

Here's a more detailed look at the alternative lifestyles Kerouac promoted:

1. Counter-Cultural Freedom and Rejection of Mainstream Norms:

Rejection of Materialism:

Kerouac's "Dharma Bums" embrace minimal possessions and reject the emphasis on material wealth that is common in mainstream culture.

Unconventional Work and Living Arrangements:

They prioritize temporary jobs and unconventional living situations, often choosing to live as "homeless travelers".

Embracing Chaos and the Journey:

Kerouac's writing celebrates the journey and the beauty found in the unexpected twists and turns of life.

2. The Dharma Bum Lifestyle:

Spiritual Exploration:

Dharma Bums often explore Buddhism and other spiritual practices as a way to find meaning and purpose in life.

Free Thinking and Creativity:

They prioritize intellectual curiosity and creative expression, often finding fulfillment in writing and other artistic endeavors.

I notice that there's a long gap in your job history and it said for 22 years you went Kerouac on everyone's ass?

Hahaha!

Lafargue's book is worth a look. Short. But the key takeways:

- Work is slavery. The Greeks knew this well.

- The 'value' of hard work is Protestant propaganda. Before Protestantism Europeans had far more days off. Protestant 'values' were, in Marxist terms (Lafargue was Marx's son-in-law), the ideological superstructure of the capitalist system and the employer class.

I used to be very into the beat way of thinking. I didn't live it but found it an interesting point in time- people our great grandparents age completely fucking off when hardly anyone did that and it was really looked down on.

The truth is they were all degenerates and alcoholics, which is pretty weak. Allen Ginsburg was a big part of it and he's a fat kike pedophile but they all loved him (leftists still worship him). Neal Cassidy, the inspiration for Dean Moriarty was a disgusting homosexual that would ruin marriages. All the beats were faggots really because they didn't believe in any restrictions so they just fucked anything. This is disgusting and the start of the STD epidemic around today.

and even if he was a proficient writer, Kerouac was a massive pussy in real life. Never lived on his own and always lived with his mother who took care of him. All he did was drink and aged fast because of it. Basically a redditor. He didn't live long.

There's nothing romantic or rock and roll about killiing yourself with jew drugs or alcohol. It's just pathetic.

and Dharma Bums sucked shit. Terrible fucking book.

I knew some of these guys when they were old. They were all wastiods. maybe their shtick was cool in 1960, but in 1980's it was not.

Hunter was fun, but dangerous in a way I've never experienced before or since. (at the time no one knew about hte snuff films, now looking back, it makes total sense) Abbie Hoffman though, that was a keen mind, a keen mind indeed. Maybe the smartest of the bunch. Leary... Fuck my man, this guy was gone, just gone. A sailor, who sailed away.

Some of the merry pranksters were still about at the eagles nest in Oregon and they were all drunken degenerates. Fun, but degenerate. Still trying to fuck 18 year old deadhead girls (and they did in fact!)

I was at a lecture Timothy Leary gave. I don't know why I went to it because I didn't run in those circles and it wasn't required. I think it was when I would just go to see guest speakers without knowing about them when they came to speak. I had to pay for them no matter what so I thought I would go to lectures blind. I thought he was pretty intelligent, though there were a bunch of fanboys that stood and clapped (for real) when he spoke. Even back then there were a bunch of wannabe trust fund hippy fags.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and you can take the same glass is half empty posture toward pirates and gunfighters. Anti-social criminals that fucked prostitutes and rejected convention and establishment notions of morality. The point, the only point that matters in this environment, is these people have represented something different from 9 to fivers that think they are edgy by meanposting on the internet. Obviously in anything you have to take stuff selectively.

Even Anton LaVey rejected drugs, for example, by running what was effectively a 60s sex cult. And anyone that fails to recognize in sexuality the potential for an organizing principle is little more than an unimaginative bluenose.

You'll of course see similar themes in fellow beatnik William S. Burroughs, Henry Miller, Bukowski, even Hunter S. Thompson. I find it interesting that Evola took a liking to the beatniks as he saw them as mounting the only real confrontation against the modern world of the post-war era. Charles Manson of course is essentially representative of this milieu.

Plus, the fact that a bit of LSD-25 does expand the mind.
