Lewis was Jewish and was probably the foremost scholar on the Middle East in the West in his day. He died a few years ago. This book was in proofs when 9/11 happened. Lewis wrote a brief note saying this book, while not about 9/11, helped to explain how it happened. Despite his prominence he is sometimes deemed an Islamophobe.
