Who has more in common with France: Anglos or Russians?

Going by Huntington's metric this would be cut and dried.

But it is of course open to debate, and as Chomsky said: is a device to control people. In this schema Latin America, which obviously has close Western affinities, is its own civilization and Russia is the pole of an 'Orthodox civilization'.

But Greece has obvious Western affinities while also being Orthodox and the Southern Cone of South America is not really the same as Bolivia or Honduras.

It was interesting reading about Soviet troops getting confused driving around East Germany because of the different alphabet. But is this civilizational marker really that determinative? France is the eldest daughter of the (Catholic) church. Are Catholicism and Orthodoxy, though supposedly being prime markers of civilizational difference, really more different than Catholicism and dissenter Protestantism are? The best case for dissenters and Catholics being more similar perhaps is they have more of the same ancestors.

Should also note that if you look closely at his map there Huntington included the Philippines in Western Civilization. As well as Papua New Guinea.

The Iranians have also notably objected to Huntington's map - as they see it as ideological justification for aggressive wars on Muslim countries. Pretty much Chomsky's position.
