Watched a little documentary about guys in MaxSecure prison doing anywhere from 10 years to life. They volunteer Mon-Fri 7am-330pm to make quilts for for every kid in the State that's in foster care.

It's a job they really care about doing, and shit, work is work , then you go home , or back to your cell, not alot of difference really.

They're not really in prison those 8.5 hours, they're just at work. Damn Nazis were right again

I cleared out this back woods drive to a remote location one time. All I did was cut a bunch of brush out of the way to clear a path for a road. It was the freest I have ever felt in my life. Hacking through the thick underbrush with no regard for wildlife; it was me versus nature. I felt truly free.

Any one open to putting prisoners on farms having them raise animals and grow food surplus after feeding them selves goes to who needs it or sell it to fund their captivity?

The county sheriffs have an inmate yard work crew. Sheriff pickup tows a trailer with a proper riding mower, weedwhips and leaf blowers.

They're still in their jail stripes, but must be nice to be out in a park doing some yard work instead of staring at bricks or a fence.

Ours even walk down a road picking up trash. Sometimes people will throw packs of cigarettes out their windows of their cars for the inmates. Most of the deputies kind of "turn their heads" at this.

(actually, adding up all the little individual taxes, the actual tax rate comes out to 50-80%. About the same as the Commie Countries but without all the free stuff such as medical and higher education)

All prisoners should be made to work, especially thieves. They need to understand the value of and fullfillment that can be and is derived from productivity. If I ever happen to find myself in prison, I will do everything within my power to work for/at the prison, and as much as possible.

Not prison, but jail. I worked in the kitchen the short time I was there. It sucked a lot. In exchange other things got more comfortable. The housing unit has less people, a microwave, ice, and you get better clothes. You could shave once a day if you wanted to, instead of once a week. The thing is that the jail makes money off you being there. It's basically slave labor when they're already making money on your incarceration. I don't know if it was worth it.
