I think my dog just ate 5 baby rabbits, should I be concerned?

He keeps coming back with them, must have cleared out the hutch by now. I got rid of 3 already, but I think he is on number 5 or 6. 110 lbs, high energy breed.

My cat brings baby rabbits to me alive, not injured.
I think he thinks they are kittens.

Baby rabbits are indeed called "kittens".

He may vomit some bone & gristle, he'll be Ok.

Dogs are carnivores.

He's fine. Probably the most nutritious meal he's had in years.

Yep. Probably not an issue, but keep an eye out for symptoms.

My dogs are raw fed, just the way nature intended, he will be fine. I won't bore you with the details.

I don’t think you have to be worried. Just grossed out. What breed?

[ - ] Cunty 1 point 1 dayJun 4, 2025 02:34:41 ago (+1/-0)

If you saw and knew how dog food was made, you would be grossed out, nothing wrong with a dog eating a rabbit it caught, just the way it should be. I remember watching a doc on how dog food was made, it then made me feed my dogs on raw, they love it and look fantastic on it.

I know how dog food is made. Its gross but I don’t have to see it. When my dog brings a half alive animal into the house and he’s chomping on it and blood and feces are squirting on to my floor which I then have to clean, its gross. This has happened. Its how I know. And they usually have fleas which is also really cool. Store bought dog food=> no fleas.

You know how dog food is made and you continue to feed it. I hope your dog isn't one of the 50% over the age of 10 that gets cancer. I don't believe you really do know as no one would willingly feed their animals the tinned food once they knew.

My dogs regularly catch, kill and eat animals, never had an issue with fleas, ticks or anything else.

Stop being such an out and out pussy. Was it a little to icky for you?. Man up and let him eat his catch. He would probably lick the blood up if you leave him to it.

Probably marsh hare or American lop.

Only if they were your neighbor's rabbits and saw him do it.

Otherwise he's just well fed now.

I mean. The rabbits are definitely dead. I don't think there's anything you can do about that.

[ - ] NaturalSelectionistWorker 0 points 1 dayJun 4, 2025 03:45:07 ago (+0/-0)

Depends, were they your rabbits, someone else's rabbits, or wild rabbits? If they were yours, your only concern is that you're now short a few rabbits. If they were someone else's and they find out, you owe someone some rabbits. If they were wild, he's probably fine, but maybe check him for worms in a few days, never know what those wild animals might have had on them.

I had a beagle eat some alive once, she was fine (and very proud of herself). I would bet yours will be fine as long as the crunchy bits went down okay.

My dog ate everything he could, rabbits, mice, gophers etc. He never got sick, I was never worried about him eating stuff he killed anyway.
