I first heard Redbone's second album "Potlatch" in 1972. Easily the best track was "Maggie", a five minute piece with heavy bass and an incredibly catchy hook.

The single that came from their first album was "Niki Hoeky" in 1970. My mom bought that 45, which I still have.

Their third album, "Message From a Drum", produced the single "Witch Queen of New Orleans", which is also still well known.

They were on the show "Midnight Special", which came on at 1AM Friday night/Saturday mornings and was hosted by Wolfman Jack, which is where the clip above comes from. They stopped performing in 1977, having gone about as far as an Indian band could go in the 1970s, probably the only time when that would be possible. They had a few overtly political songs, but their rock/funk music was what most people responded to.

I was watching some Indian girls YouTube channel and she explained that that horrible high-pitched screeching sound that so many of the Indian tribes do when they're doing stuff is actually trying to emulate the seagull. So I don't know why the hell they chose such a high-pitched animal to try to emulate but apparently they really like all the flying birds so that horrible I mean nails on a chalkboard screeching sound that you hear not in this song but in so many native American dances and stuff is actually trying to emulate the calls of some birds.
