Well, I suppose you have a calendar and know it's Friday. Well, I double-checked and made damned sure that it's Friday. So, that means that it's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread. Come join us! We don't bite, as a general rule.

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:50:31 ago (+22/-1)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should upgoat go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself).

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

This is the last song idea before I had to put it down.

Dec 17

My niece got me the light up pick for my birthday. It's impossible to play with, but I wrote a little thing for her with it.

Contains chemical

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:54:42 ago (+3/-0)

The pick looks pretty damned cool.

It looked like you were in pain in the first one.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:46:30 ago (+1/-0)

I don't really have enough bandwidth to participate. My hotel sucks donkey balls. I'll listen tomorrow, though I will point out that everything contains chemicals to one extent or another.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:57:29 ago (+4/-0)

Hello, I was playing my guitar and this riff fell out of the fucking thing so I made it into a song. I had to cause it's such an earworm. At least to me and my head.

Satisfy

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:23:18 ago (+2/-0)

I'm going to wait and listen after the 'net is back up. Otherwise, it's annoying and I have to go buy another block of bandwidth. I suppose I could just pay the overages but I don't like the phone company that much.

I'm at the Starling and paying almost 1,000 a night for a suite and the fucking internet keeps fucking up.

It is a nice suite and the food is delicious, but I've had better internet at a fucking Econolodge.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:25:41 ago (+2/-0)

$1000 bucks a night and they cant let you have wifi?

ridiculous!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:29:00 ago (+2/-0)

Oh, I had wireless internet. It was pretty speedy, in fact.

It just doesn't work all the time. It's now going on an hour and the 'net is still down.

I figured we'd be here for a bit, so got a suite. It's a beautiful suite with a great view of the Atlanta skyline. It's pretty good - but does not meet my expectations with regard to their internet service.

For the price I'm paying, there should be several modes of failover that automatically kick-in when the service is down or degraded. That's not complicated. It's not cheap but it's not that expensive. They can easily afford it.

It's the Starling but it's owned by Hilton. It just doesn't have Hilton plastered all over the place.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:43:02 ago (+2/-0)

My first inclination is to do some beefheart shit over this, but I'll refrain.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:45:03 ago (+1/-0)

I dont know what that means

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:11:41 ago (+1/-0)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Beefheart For those who don't know what that means.

He sounds crazy LoL

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:41:48 ago (+1/-0)

Is this about the chick that was pole dancing before? I'm going to jam with you if it ever gets below 100 out here.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:46:18 ago (+1/-0)

I'm not sure what it's about, when I heard that riff I looked in the pile of lyrics I had wrote in the past when they came to me, and that was the first one I pulled out. It seemed to fit so I went with it.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:50:41 ago (+4/-0)

Hello and welcome to another Friday Night Guitar Thread. Like normal, we'll go ahead and get you started. That seems like the thing to do! Then again, that's something we always do, regardless of who opens the thread.

These 'deep archives' have been a pretty solid source for some older content that hasn't been shared for a long time. This week's song was insane. It was so insane that I still remember it. First, the song:

LZ - Over the Hills and Far Away (B #2, #4, #5; J B; TB P & #1, #3, #6)

What we've done is we've covered the studio version. There are so many individual parts that this song was never performed like it was in the studio. Parts of it require entirely different guitars and amps to cover it properly - or to cover it as was done in the studio at the time.

It took quite a bit of effort to get it all together. The mix isn't that great. This was recorded and mixed more than five years ago. Still, it's not terrible.

I will point out that the song is pretty long. Some folks just don't have that much patience. I can't say that I blame them. But, stick this one out. If you're at all familiar with the song, you'll know that we punch you in the ears just after we've lulled you into a sense of ease. It's a great song for that!

Anyhow...

We could technically almost have something new - if people would get off their asses to finsh it up. LOL (I'm one of those people who has a bit more work to do). Obviously, we can't do that work in our current situation.

The hotel's wireless is spotty but I've got my phone. I'm not sure how long we'll be here tonight, but I should have at least an hour to hang out. There's not much else to do.

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

[ - ] ChatGPT 3 points 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:57:19 ago (+3/-0)

Man alive. 6 guitars! Didn't know that. Sounds bad ass.

I thought Atlanta was full of niggers. What are you doing there. Sheeeit!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 7 hoursJun 7, 2025 10:55:19 ago (+0/-0)

Porsche's American HQ is here in Atlanta. I needed some service done, the scheduled 30,000 mile service.

Except, I'll be trading that in at this point. I managed to get an allocation for a GT3 RS and am working on the customization options over a few days. The existing 2015 GT3 RS (the one getting the service) is being traded in against the cost of the new one. They gave me a fantastic offer. They didn't want me to just pay in cash. They wanted to have the existing car for inventory.

Once I place the order, the car should be here in the US in 6 to 8 months. I've yet to place the order. I'll place the order with an initial configuration. I can change that configuration at any time up to 30 days before they start the build, but that's a hassle. I'd like to get it right the first time around.

And that's why I'm in Atlanta.

There's also the Redneck Racetrack. Basically, there are a number of cities that are 'Atlanta'. They're really different cities in one metro area.

Well, there's a ring road, a giant multi-lane highway that circles the city. If you go out at night, or early on a weekend morning, there's very little traffic and the cops do not care what you do, as long as you don't wreck. It's something fun to do with the loaner while I'm down here.

The loaner is just a 'poverty spec' 2024 911. It's still fun.

Also, I've never had my own custom ordered, brand new Porsche. The missus has a 2023 718 Boxter (fairly inexpensive and not a huge performance vehicle) but I have never owned my own new Porsche. I've cusstom ordered cars before but not from Porsche.

I'll also be ordering a new C8 ZR1 because they're awesome. They're also 'cheap' when you look at the features and performance you're getting. It's gasoline powered and RWD - but still can do 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds. They come with over 1,000 HP - from the factory.

I will definitely be ordering one. I didn't like the C4, C5, or C6 Corvette models that much. The C7 and C6 are amazing. They even have a good interior, which is surprising. No more cheap plastic all over the place.

Erf...

It's your fault. This is a long reply because you asked why I was here. I'm here for car-things. If you get me started talking about cars, it's going to be a long reply. So, yeah...

Anyhow...

Yes, there are six guitar parts. The studio version would be pretty hard to play in a live performance. Led Zeppelin never played it the same way in their concerts, as it'd have required more people.

There are all sorts of songs like that. They do a great job in the studio but then can't play the same thing in a live performance.

Then, you have bands like The Black Crowes. Their studio music is amazing (at times). Their live performances just plain suck. Do not go see them perform live.

While they're in the studio, they're playing with all sorts of alternative tuning. They'll often use different tuning for different parts of a song (in a studio). By the time this is a live performances, they're playing shitty renditions with guitars that aren't even in tune.

So, don't go see them live. I gave them two tries. I'll never see them live again. They sucked both times, with the second time being even worse.

Are you familiar with Eric Johnson's song Cliffs of Dover? Well, that was recorded part way with a Strat and the rest of it was recorded with a Gibson ES-335. They're two very different tones and the studio matched them up in production. So, the live version is never the same as the studio version because Johnson switched instruments mid-way through the song.

Most folks won't notice that. I noticed it and I'd get confirmation of this later on when he commented about it in a guitar magazine.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 15:53:19 ago (+1/-0)

Gibson ES-335 I had to look that up. I was in a metal band with these 2 brothers Drummer/Lead Guitar player had one of these. I never tried playing his, but he could jam that thing and the leads were awesome sounding. I played rhythm guitar and bass with them for about four years.

Hey, so technically... I learned to play the guitar near Macon at Robbins AFB. Retired Macon PD officer who pulled security posts had some Allman Brothers stories to share during boring shifts. The college bars were pretty good too with quality live bands in Macon.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1 hourJun 7, 2025 16:49:37 ago (+0/-0)

You can get some great tones from a Gibson hollow body (some spell it as one word). But, like all hollow bodied guitars, you need to be aware of feedback. Hollow and semi-hollow bodied electric guitars have that space inside where it all resonates. This leads to feedback pretty quickly.

You get used to it and learn to not face the amps when you're near them and to keep the strings muted when you need to. Otherwise, you get feedback that's tough to tame.

By the way, this is the 'Redneck Racetrack':

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_285_(Georgia)

My company actually did quite a bit of work for Georgia. The first project was sometime fairly early in my company's history. I want to say it was the early-90s when we did some modeling on said Redneck Raceway. We suggested that during peak traffic they would be wise to increase some areas to 10 lanes. Even though it would only be valuable during peak times, specifically during the hours around traditional commuting times, it would be beneficial by increasing throughput. It'd also be safer as those areas would have a variety of designations for the various slip roads around the place.

As I recall, they did about 80% of what we suggested and they'd eventually make the other changes.

They also had poor signage standards. We consulted on that, helping to create new standards for their highway department. In that case, I'd say they went a little overboard and ended up with more signs than necessary. You can still see the results of that. An easy example to spot is to drive along the highways and look at the side of the road as you approach an exit. They'll start placing signs very early and very often. This is unnecessary and can cause confusion.

People are easily overwhelmed when given too much information - and they're prone to ignoring things when they're fed a lot of information. If they see 10 signs saying there's an exit coming up, they'll stop paying attention to the signs - especially if the signs start well ahead of the exit.

Highway signs are fascinating.

Well, I realize that I'm in a very small group of people who thinks so. New York has some of the best signage.

There's everything from the color to the font, to the size and distance, and then there's the fascinating choice of fonts. All of those things go into how well highway markers and signs work.

I won't bore you with more of that. Suffice to say, I can talk about roads for a very long time. In fact, I've done just that. My company took all of those things, and more, into consideration. We'd validate the metrics and assign values to them. We'd then model that and make recommendations based on what we observevd and what we could predict.

Ah well...

You mentioned 'security'. Is that what you did at the time? Is that still what you do for a living?

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:59:36 ago (+2/-0)

That sounds pretty damned good to me. It was great!

Hell yeah!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:14:54 ago (+2/-0)

Glad ya liked it.

I'm connected with my phone and have limited bandwidth on said phone because that's the phone I have with me.

sighs

The hotel's wireless is out and has been out for a half hour or so. I called the front desk to bitch about it.

I hate this fucking hotel. Hell, I don't even like Georgia, though I have spent quite a bit of time here and have some interesting stories of the area.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:16:43 ago (+2/-0)

It sucks to have internet issues, especially on Friday night.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:25:59 ago (+2/-0)

I don't get annoyed often. I get annoyed when someone fails me. I get annoyed when I'm paying someone for something and they fail me.

I don't get angry often. That's not something I do.

This? This is pissing me off.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:27:02 ago (+2/-0)

Im surprised they dont have a data jack on the wall for when the wifi is down

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:32:19 ago (+2/-0)

Hotels haven't had that for years. LOL

I don't even have an ethernet to USB adapter with me, so it'd do me no good.

I'm using my phone still.

When the day shift is on, I will go talk to the manager. I will have my bill reduced accordingly, and then some more for having to deal with this hassle multiple times during our stay.

They can't even say, "It's Friday, so we're out of capacity." No, this happens even during the week. It happens in the middle of the day. It happens at night.

You've known me for quite a while. I don't get annoyed at much and I seldom get angry.

I'm quite annoyed. I'm going to tell the front desk to comp me a bottle of wine for the hassle.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:47:16 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, I know you're not generally an angry person at all

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:53:31 ago (+3/-0)

I seldom get angry, even if people don't quite meet my expectations.

This? This is gross negligence. It's a minor detail but it's something I planned on using and paid for. I paid to be able to use their wireless internet. That's a part of my bill.

I do not like not getting what I paid for. I do not like it when someone fails me.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:58:26 ago (+2/-0)

I dont like not getting what I paid for either. That does upset me as well

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:47:03 ago (+2/-0)

The mix is great it's just too quiet like all my shit. I love the violin sounding lead tone on the solo.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:51:41 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks. We were still fairly new to some new software at the time and the mix could be improved.

I don't have all those stubs saved anywhere, so that's as good as it's going to get. I do not see us recreating the track though it might make for an interesting contrast.

I started casually recording in 2016 or so. I'd just use a phone and maybe play with it in Audacity. In 2018, I started taking it more seriously and bought things like a digital audio input and all that jazz. I already owned great mics but I bought more. I learned to properly mic my drum set up, for example. Drum mics for recording are very different than they are for performing, so that was a thing...

So, in 2020 this was a fairly complicated task for us. It could definitely be improved.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:51:31 ago (+3/-0)

I don't know what the fuck this is. Another forgotten one. I can tell it's another recorded in the Austin storage unit.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:06:51 ago (+1/-0)

There's a play button that doesn't really stick out, did it not show up at all?

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:07:36 ago (+0/-0)

I clicked the play button but got no response from it

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 16:23:42 ago (+0/-0)

That one was pretty damn cool. Progressive Rock gets pretty wild.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:18:54 ago (+2/-0)

Stone And Flame!

I created another AI to write song lyrics and give me some ideas on what to prompt the Music Generator AIs. I ran it through my entire music collection, and fed it a bunch of music theory, plus how different instruments work in a Rock Band and it works pretty good so far. Part 2 of this song has been written, but not ran through an AI Music Generator yet. My goal was to create an AI Music Generator also, but I haven't achieved that part yet.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 20 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:30:45 ago (+0/-0)

That's quite a bit different than the other one

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 16:07:16 ago (+1/-0)

The AI that wrote the lyrics and the metal song idea was one that I made up to attempt to generate music. Then Sona gives you the option to create a persona for some standardization I'll go ahead and add part 2 of b]Stone And Flame[b]: I asked it to write the lyrics about mans tribulations as tribes grew to civilizations in early human history.[Blood Of The Clay and Blood Of The Clay1 are the 2 raw outputs from Sona.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:51:00 ago (+2/-0)*

I'll throw some of my AI songs on here, if I can get a sound hosting service to cooperate I Love Him, More Than My Shoes! I just finished mixing this one the way I wanted it to turn out earlier today.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:57:54 ago (+2/-0)

What did you do to create this? Give AI a prompt? How does this work?

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:05:26 ago (+1/-0)

I wrote out the lyrics. Since I didn't get specific with styles it gave me 2 versions, that I combined to make a longer song. I did some work on the DAW to improve sound quality and get the desired effects.

I created another AI to write song lyrics and give me some ideas on what to prompt the Music Generator AIs. I ran it through my entire music collection, and fed it a bunch of music theory, plus how different instruments work in a Rock Band and it works pretty good so far.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:08:56 ago (+2/-0)

Interesting.

[ - ] oppressed 1 point 13 hoursJun 7, 2025 04:31:09 ago (+1/-0)

i can see the ai thinks the singer should sing each verse a little differently than each other, thats probably an important concept for songwriters

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 3 hoursJun 7, 2025 14:45:36 ago (+0/-0)

Many guitar players do that also. It's a cool idea and keeps the songs from becoming so plain sounding. I would do that, if I were still playing live for sure. Also during the rock mix I think it adds to the build up and tension of the lyrics.

I passed "I Love Him, More than My shoes." on to my 2nd cousin who sings for Bruiser Spokane... I don't think she saw the humor in my lyrics. LOL She rocks anyway and I'm certain they have a ton of songs to choose from for their sets.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 8 hoursJun 7, 2025 10:09:49 ago (+0/-0)

Which AI are you using?

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 3 hoursJun 7, 2025 14:32:19 ago (+1/-0)

Suno seems to be pretty much the best I have used so far (for music generation) Suno also has an app in the Playstore. I have many AI models to emulate the TechGenie AI model I got from Meta, which resides on their systems. It basically uses other AI and is a LLM I specially trained to do I.T. problem solving. I haven't figured out how to get one of my own, installed on my system, to create music yet.AIMusic Stemify and Soundful are a few others I have tried out. search "AI Music Generator" and you'll get a list of websites.
AI Apps: AI Music Generator APP - OK, but not the best. I think this one gave me a country song instead of hard rock and metal like I asked for.

Chord AI APP - This one is geared towards learning music. Pretty good, recommended for new guitar players.

Moises APP Also geared towards learning songs. May be more useful for paid version (I'm poor, so I have some free stuff that works out if anyone needs tips.)

The AI aren't great at mixing songs down to stereo or doing post recording audio production work in general. I pull many tools into the DAW - Cakewalk; but my guitar sound is really straight from the amp with only a tube distortion pedal and a tuner on my pedal board. (Other effects are added later when needed.)

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 16:25:05 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks. I'll have to see about playing with Suno sometime in the near future.

[ - ] oppressed 1 point 10 hoursJun 7, 2025 08:12:54 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 8 hoursJun 7, 2025 10:16:11 ago (+0/-0)

It took a minute to start playing and keeps starting and stopping.

That's not your fault, it's that my internet sucks right now.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 3 hoursJun 7, 2025 15:05:09 ago (+0/-0)

The recording quality was excellent! I kinda like the synth and the developing concept here. I'd probably be trying to figure out how to fit my guitar into the mix, but luckily I have had to cover keyboard and synth parts that were important to the cover song so I think I could adapt well.

Damn, I didn't get to play in a band with anyone who played keys either. Well, there's always online collaborations I could try out.

[ - ] Leveraction 1 point 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:32:47 ago (+2/-1)

Doesn't anyone here play an actual instrument like the piano?

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 18 hoursJun 7, 2025 00:23:04 ago (+1/-0)

I have a piano but I suck at it cause I just pick up a guitar way more often than play the piano

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 15:37:06 ago (+1/-0)

I bet you could knock out a live tune in short order.

I'm thinking it sounds like a good add on to my system, but I might try to find some MIDI capable board. I can search with the smarter phone while browsing the shops and online, and I bet I can find something cheap and functional.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 15:52:56 ago (+0/-0)

I should add piano to my tunes here and there

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 hoursJun 7, 2025 10:15:28 ago (+1/-0)

Yes. I share all sorts of material with keys, flute, violin, etc...

Over the years, we've had all sorts of instruments played - all of which are actual instruments. (You'd know that if you were a musician.)

However, it's right there in the title. This is the guitar thread. We accept all music but our personal focus is on guitar.

Amusingly, the piano is also a chordophone and stringed instruments of this type predate the piano by hundreds and hundreds of years, perhaps as many as thousands of years. But, the guitar and piano are in the same family and the guitar is much harder to learn than a piano.

But, you know all that. You're an expert after all. Otherwise you wouldn't come in here trying to offer your opinion on the matter. So, we'll defer to your expertise...

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 8 hoursJun 7, 2025 10:24:24 ago (+2/-0)

There's piano on nearly all of my shit, but I was not willing to entertain a moron.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 hoursJun 7, 2025 11:03:46 ago (+2/-0)

I figured I'd at least entertain myself with the reply.

It's funny how people have such strong opinions on things they know nothing about. I have spent my lifetime learning, not just the guitar but many things. There are still things I don't know very well - so I don't have much of an opinion on those things.

I'm not sure why it's so hard for people to say the following:

"I am not qualified to hold an opinion."

If you're not qualified, don't opine. I will opine on matters I do understand but I'm quite comfortable admitting that there are things I just don't know.

I'll also happily say, "I don't have enough information to give you my thoughts on the matter. Let me spend some time learning about the subject and I'll get back to you."

Sadly, people like them not only vote but they also breed. Kids often end up a lot like their parents.

I'm also amused that they picked the piano. If you want a complicated instrument that is played like a piano, look at the old-fashioned pipe organs. (Which are awesome, for the record.) Even a modern organ is capable of being pretty complicated to play.

But, no... They picked the piano... The paino is one of the easiest instruments to learn. They might as well have picked the kazoo or harmonica.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 7 hoursJun 7, 2025 11:15:42 ago (+1/-0)

Pedal steel is the craziest thing I've put hands on, but even a kazoo is complicated if you want to be good.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 2 hoursJun 7, 2025 15:27:48 ago (+0/-0)

I have played many different instruments myself. I don't currently have many different instruments, it wouldn't be practical with my chronic pain. I had an accordion for a few years. Before that I had a Trombone, and learned trumpet, baritone, and tuba. They forced me to play my own music in music theory on an upright piano, but at least my aunts had their own grand pianos. I sucked, I was a kid. LOL

Two guitars is enough for me now, but who knows what I might run across later on. Online collaborating kind of sounds fun and it beats packing gear out to a location.
