It's because of politics. Governments require all this emission control shit be strapped to engines which takes up large amounts of space and generates a lot more heat. If it takes up more space, you need a bigger frame. If it's generating more heat, you need a bigger radiator. At the same time, safety standards are requiring more and more airbags all over the vehicle. You end up with longer and thicker dash panels, thicker A, B, and C pillars, thicker door panels, etc. Cars aren't built for drivers, they're built to protect retards. Which, ironically, makes the situation worse. Because now you're increasing the weight of a vehicle by a massive amount which just makes it cause more damage when it does hit something.
