Yeah, but the English have comparable drinking and binge drinking rates - and for all the talk of Irish rowdiness it is English football hooliganism that is known as the 'English disease'. The English white working class is not exactly known for its sophistication. Outside of London England is as poor as Mississippi. When we think of the English it is almost always the 'better' sorts in the upper classes, especially historically.

Somehow being drunken brawlers comes across as less objectionable nowadays - especially when the alternative seems to be a middle class, cloistered, paper pushing pussy. Northern Ireland is the most terror ridden area in Europe due to dissident republicans. Meaning they'll fight. Is this good or bad? That question is not so cut and dried.
