Satan was not originally a force of evil in the ancient jewish religion. He was Yahweh’s helper, who tried to weed out the “bad” jews. At some point, possibly under the influence of the Persians, he was cast as an evil spirit, similar to ones in Zoroastrianism. Ancient judaism wasn’t much concerned with evil as a force, just disobedience toward Yahweh’s will. And Yahweh did bad stuff all the time.
