Its aight. At the time (windows xp) they were getting nuked by spyware and adware. Every PC had the shit. Then some company called giant antispyware came along with a solution that actually worked. Microsoft decided to buy them on the spot. Then it was embedded in to the os and called "Microsoft defender "
It since has gotten better.
Unfortunately by installing defender you agreed to be spied on.
Now that we are on windows 11 you agreed to be spied on anyway, so the defender part doesn't matter anyway.
As far as anti-virus you aught to install a third party one. Get one with a firewall because its the correct tool for the biggest threat
I remember testing that about windows XP once; about 60 seconds after being exposed to an internet connection, the blaster worm appeared in its process list!
