1) Kodi (using a linux server). The details on this should be fairly well written up but I don't personally use this one. Instead I use the

Basically, I put small linux boxes at all my "television" stations and use sshfs to mount directories from machines on the network (sshfs username@IP-ADDRESS: /location/to/mount/directory/). This gives you an encrypted internal network (ssh). No strange deamons running or codec issues if you know how to tune a linux system. I recommend using mpv as your media player and get one of those low power wireless media keyboards such as the Logitech K400.

There are webmail clients (apps) that work, and tiny programs like aerc and (neo)mutt work perfect out of a container app that can be run from any place while having the files reside on a number of online storage places. This is what many of the new script kiddies are doing.
Using an online webapp is just how people get hacked.
