The people recommending Linux often have a multitude of computers at their disposal. Often because they work in the IT field or just because its their hobby. It is easy to forget that most people have just *the one* computer that they own and rely on.
I've seen no evidence to suggest that there was ever a novel disease. The narrative that people are "dropping like flies" does not hold up to my lived experience. Nobody died. Anybody who fell ill could extremely easily be explained as having a common cold or flu.
In fact, if it weren't for the screens that everybody has their attention glued to, there would never have been any notion that anything was going on. Everybody was just reacting to stories that they got through their phones and TVs.
Microsoft know that the vast majority of their users will never switch away to anything else. They know that the vast majority of their users are too technically inept to entertain any such idea.
Microsoft can and will continue to push an endless torrent of anti-user "features" and pretty much all Windows users functionally have no choice but to grit their teeth and bear it.
