I don't think you give Sony enough credit during the actual time period. They had the best implementation of face buttons, shoulder buttons, and sticks.

The Dualshock 1 was pretty revolutionary at the time, the layout was perfect and symmetrical. Most kids then were counting the number of buttons, rumble motors, and sticks.

Being in 1998-00, the use of four shoulder buttons was insane. Add in the fact that games support not one, but freaking two analog sticks, and built in rumble motors with no batteries to deal with. It was a winner in most people's choice.

Also Sony has been pretty conservative, they know the industry and if you fuck up the controller, that could kill the entire console permanently. Therefore they chose to enhance the Dualshock 2 with analog buttons and improved sticks.

Nintendo's controller were all over the place, but each one was well designed. The Gamecube's second stick was just a reuse of the C-buttons, and that killed it for many.

Albeit the N64 and GC controllers are the most comfortable of all. Most people saw the Dualshock 1 and 2, and it made sense. Nice layout, plenty of buttons, twin analog sticks, D-pad, four action buttons, and four shoulder buttons. It was stacked and like I said, well laid out.

The first Xbox controller was really a continuation of the Dreamcast controller.
