They left out the Saturn controller that came with Nights. I'm pretty sure that's the one that introduced analogue triggers, plus it came out before the Nintendo 64 in the US. I'm almost positive that first Sidewinder gamepad from 1995 had no analogue at all, though there was a Sidewinder branded flight stick at the time that probably did.
I added the Sega part myself. The original meme was made by a Nintendrone. Didn't add all Sega controllers because there wasn't enough space next to the original image and I do not know any aspect about the one that came with Nights that it was first in. Also, technically the 1989 controller introduced analog triggers, too. It just wasn't a shoulder button, since the tech back then wasn't small enough. I mean, the whole thing is way larger than even the Duke controller.

I don't think you give Sony enough credit during the actual time period. They had the best implementation of face buttons, shoulder buttons, and sticks.
The Dualshock 1 was pretty revolutionary at the time, the layout was perfect and symmetrical. Most kids then were counting the number of buttons, rumble motors, and sticks.
Being in 1998-00, the use of four shoulder buttons was insane. Add in the fact that games support not one, but freaking two analog sticks, and built in rumble motors with no batteries to deal with. It was a winner in most people's choice.
Also Sony has been pretty conservative, they know the industry and if you fuck up the controller, that could kill the entire console permanently. Therefore they chose to enhance the Dualshock 2 with analog buttons and improved sticks.
Nintendo's controller were all over the place, but each one was well designed. The Gamecube's second stick was just a reuse of the C-buttons, and that killed it for many.
Albeit the N64 and GC controllers are the most comfortable of all. Most people saw the Dualshock 1 and 2, and it made sense. Nice layout, plenty of buttons, twin analog sticks, D-pad, four action buttons, and four shoulder buttons. It was stacked and like I said, well laid out.
The first Xbox controller was really a continuation of the Dreamcast controller.
I must be the only person who was pissed that Sony caved to the media ridicule over the PS3 "Batarang". It looked clean and comfortable, and Sony were vain little bitches for cancelling it.
