The Mandarin character for yellow, 黄 (huáng in pinyin) was described to me as a stylized hieroglyphic of a strong, ideal Chinese man because they associated yellow with their ideal physical form. To them, it seems like a compliment. Either that or the Taiwanese broad teaching me Mandarin was blowing smoke up my ass.
