My father-in-law told me a story about deer hunting with a couple of buddies. One shot a big buck, but it took off into thick brush. They followed the spotty blood trail and finally found it laying under a bush. My father-in-law had a big knife, so he volunteered to go in and cut it's throat to bleed it out and drag it out of the bush. When he stuck it in the neck it tried to get up and started kicking. when it was finally still they pulled it out and when they skinned the buck there was no bullet hole. My father-in-law killed a sleeping buck with a knife. They never did find the one his buddy had shot.

I walked up to some sleeping Axis on my place just the other day, surprised the hell out of them. Not impossible, might be improbable, but not impossible. p.s. My ranch is in the TX Hill Country, lots of Axis & white tail.
