Site improvement megathread

Is a feature missing? Want a feature? Does something annoy you?

Post all your complaints and suggestions regarding the site here. I'm gonna try to knock out a good portion of it this week.

When you de-expand video, the video is still playing in the background. Also, when you expand video, the video doesn't automatically play. You have to press play.

When you press the plus sign to expand a post, the plus sign doesn't change to a minus sign.

When I edit this comment, I notice I can't make the text box larger when editing even though I see that icon at the bottom right corner that should allow me to drag it to make the text box larger. It doesn't expand the text box.

Format of each row (post) is too vertically large. Original voat wasn't so vertically large. Too much padding.

If I'm in a subverse and I want to post to it, I have to fill out the subverse I want to post to instead of it just auto-populating with the subverse I'm currently in.

Replies to comments are not very obvious at first glance. Poal has a better interface to distinguish who comments on what comment. No notification that someone commented on your comment.

On the main page which display posts? It's actually slightly larger on old voat, look at the top.

As far as vertical space, yes, the front page was what I was talking about. It looks pretty close now. Howevever the comments page of a post has too much vertical spacing. See below:

It annoys me a little that when i click on a post of a link it opens in a new window. It reminds me of poal, and i don't like that. I'd rather it open in the same window and i just hit back.

I actually prefer it automatically opening in a new window. I hate to mention this site, but Reddit gave you the option to do either as a setting. Sounds like that would be best in this situation.

I have my PC set up that middle mouse click opens in a new window. So if i want to i can open in a new tab anytime i feel i need to.

Definitely this, and it is actually against best practice to have ordinary links open in new window/tab at all. How something opens is supposed to be between the user and the browser only.

The "hot new top" sorters overlap the "sign in register" links on mobile portrait using waterfox browser.

Sure I can just turn my phone and use landscape to tap the link but I'm not a fucking savage.

Also, I guess comment previews would be nice so I can spellcheck my epic insights before I get burned for a catastrophic typo.

Basically, all the old features of the old voat commenting system would be nice please. Hyperlinks, etc.

And since I'm asking a lot, can I have some fries with that as well, and some free tax consultation. Please. Thank you. Why do I feel so needy?

Do downvoats have an effect on CCP? It would be nice to see on a user's profile how many total upvoats and downvoats they have received for posts and comments, as well as how many total upvoats and downvoats they have administered to the comments and posts made by other users.

No feature to grab title from Link when creating post.

If I forgot to enter in subverse and try to submit post, it clears out everything and ask me to refresh post instead of automatically refreshing to retrieve what I entered in. https://files.catbox.moe/4j43ft.png

When creating a post, it would be nice if subverses were suggested in a dropdown box when you started typing in subverse box.

A personalized front page based on posts of subverses we subscribed to.
And an option to customize the subverses at the top bar of this site.
The option of blocking subverses to hide submissions of these in https://www.voat.xyz/v/all.
The option of blocking users to hide their submissions/posts.

Seems I can't un-voat. If I click the upvoat or downvoat arrow, and then try to undo it by clicking it again, nothing happens.

You can undo it by clicking the other button. So if you click upvoat accidentally, then click downvoat and refresh and it'll clear the voat.

Honestly I forgot how voat handled this. Was it just a link? I prefer the content opening in the post so I'll probably make it an option you can toggle.

You know how the comment box has the little lines in the bottom right corner, where you're supposed to be able to mouseclick grab to enlarge the typing window? Doesn't work for me.

Allow mods to edit their subs. A couple of examples: let mods switch subs from anonymous to public (or vice versa) and let mods switch subs from public to private (or vice versa).

Not sure if mentioned elsewhere. Seeing if we can implement the auto archive bot that whats-his-name had (dammit, it's been so long I've forgotten), which adds a comment for an archive link; instead of giving the source website eyeballs.

On mobile, when I’m in a thread I can’t access the hamburger to check my message or create a post or message. Many improvements to be made on mobile for sure, but this might be the biggest.

Also you never wrote back to my PM, even to say fuck off!

EDIT: It may be that it’s simply not possible to receive PM’s on mobile. I will look into this.

Clicking on thumbnails doesn't do anything, because thumbnails do not function as links. Should be an easy fix?

The section that has your username and the log off function covers another button when in desktop fullscreen.

The list of promoted subverses at the very top is cut off when not in fullscreen.

I would like a search function in a prominent location along with Explore Voat.

Perhaps sort the subverse list by alphabet and or content type. Sciency things in the science area.

If you don't put anything you lose all you wrote, title, link, description... I know it says it can recover, but I noticed it does not recover completely..
And I was putting: whatever in the subverse, and there was no certainty, because there is no search, maybe while typing, show the options. There isn't that many subverse.

Make the + (plus) icon big. For smartphone users.
This way we can click that instead of any other thing around it.
And... Once we see that picture.. If we click anywhere in the picture again.. Hide again the picture.
That makes it easy.

One thing I've always liked about Voat 1 and 2 and didn't like about Poal is that the spacing between post topics is narrow which means you can take in a lot of topics in one glance instead of endlessly scrolling, scrolling.

In the inbox it would be nice to have a "context" button that will give you the comment you made that is being responded to. So you can quickly see what those one word replies are talking about.

The option of opening links in current tab or new tab

A button for users to make reports (in comments and posts) if it's spam or something illegal that needs deletion

Alphabetize subs when in Explore Voat

Do not allow posting in v/all. Ever.

When creating new post:
A) make the sub you are currently in the default selection for where to post, and
B) if you start typing a sub name in the field for where to post, have the text recognize an existing sub;eg, if I type "rec" the field will display all subs that start with those letters, 'recipe' or 'recordings' etc

Back at the beginning of voat... Sbdh had the ability to place an animated gif next to your comments on that board, but I fear that was too resource intensive.

For some reason when you refresh a thread it sometimes duplicates your post.
