Advice on rooting cuttings

submitted by Jiggggg to Gardening 4.1 yearsMar 30, 2021 21:29:42 ago (+5/-0)     (Gardening)*

Hey everyone-

My neighbors cut down some bushes in their front yard. I suspected that one of them was an azalea, and now a couple of weeks later I see its corpse on the side of the road, blooming... It WAS an azalea!!

It was a huge plant, too big for me to move and a lot of it looked dead since it's been uprooted for so long. Some of the tips were still pliable though, so I went back and cut off about 15 cuttings or so.

I have never had any real luck with rooting cuttings but I felt like I had to say least try to save this beautiful plant. I can go back tomorrow and get more cuttings if I didn't cut them right. Any advice anyone can give will be appreciated!!

Please do! Would love to see some more OC here. I'm planning on documenting our new irrigation system setup when it comes in.

If you have an aloe Vera plant then you can use the gel as a rooting hormone. Works well.
When taking the cutting, cut at a 45 degree angle with clean fiskars and immediately smother the exposed tip in the gel.
Remove leaves from the lower half of cutting.
You actually want to use soil lacking in nutrients as over enriched soil can actually fuck things up and burn the delicate roots. I use Coco coir a bit of perlite mixed in, but also had success using sand. Keep them in a smallish pot and put a plastic bag over, keep in shade or partial sunlight.
Azalea cuttings should be ready to plant after a month or two.
Hope this helps

You need rooting hormone or they will die before rooting most likely.

The missus and her mom do amazing things with root growth hormone. It's called something like that.

You pretty much put some of that stuff on there, and stick the cutting in dirt, keep it kind of watered, and often things live!

Thanks! I've got a bottle of it that I'll use. Hopefully at least one of them will do something!

I saved a couple blackberry cuttings by rooting them last year after a rabbit fucked the plant up. I used rooting compound, put them in some potting soil with perlite, bone meal, and blood meal mixed in, then put them in a plastic tote that let in some light and held humidity in. Not having enough humidity is what killed my plant cuttings the last time I tried. I left a little water in the bottom of the tote, misted the leaves with a spray bottle and let in fresh air about once a day. Can't say this is the best way, but it worked for a couple of them.

Good to know, thanks! It's super humid here all the time (pine forest climate) but I'll be sure to keep them moist.

I made a little teepee out of pvc pipes and a plastic sheet and it's keeping it nice and steamy in there. Thanks for the tip!

I'm glad other people know more about flowers/shrubs than me!

I let the wife handle the stuff we grow that doesn't make food. :D

This is a great sub! I'm the same way... I'm pretty good at growing tomatoes and peppers and such but outside of lillies that grow no matter what, my flowers don't usually do very well!
